What is PERM?

The Program Electronic Review Management (PERM) is a system used for acquiring Labor Certification. It is a type of Labour Certification which is issued by the U.S. Department of Labor (DOL).

A US-based company can use PERM to recruit a foreign professional to work in the U.S. permanently. PERM acts as the initial step in acquiring a Green Card, allowing the holder to work and settle permanently in the U.S.

Suspension of PERM

Recent reports by Business Insider stated that Google and Amazon stopped accepting PERM applications in 2023. According to TOI, processing PERM applications has become difficult following the huge layoffs by Amazon, Google, and other companies in the technology sector.

Both Amazon and Google have put a halt on PERM applications until at least Q1 2025. In a recent letter addressed to the U.S. government, Google requested to revise the immigration policies on green cards as A.I. experts are in demand.

What are the alternatives?

Foreign job seekers looking for job positions in the U.S. technology sector can consider other alternatives beyond the usual tech hubs like Silicon Valley or New York City. Following are some options for job seekers to explore:

Canada PR

International professionals seeking tech roles abroad can opt for technology jobs in Canada. According to the Immigration Levels Plan 2024-2026, Canada is inviting 1.5 million P.R.s by 2026. With easy immigration policies and huge demand for skilled professionals in the Canadian tech field, you can get a Canada PR to work and settle in the country.
