I've always been partial to Logitech equipment, and I know they make a vista compatible Cam.
Are the squares images or something else?
Sounds like your Anti-Virus is set to being too secure. I would need to know what you're using in the AV and whether you're using Windows firewall or a third party brand. Anti-Virus software should not affect your email downloads unless there's a problem with system compatibility or the AV software itself.I've always been partial to Logitech equipment, and I know they make a vista compatible Cam.

It is possible that you may have not installed the webcam driver for it. Knowing windows it needs a driver for just about everything. Go to hp.com and go to support/drivers and type in your model number for your machine and download the driver for it. This should fix your problem. I have a dv6000 labtop. You should have an icon in your desktop that says "HP Webcam". If not, search for the program (click on windows sign, then go to "Find").
ok ..I dont know exactly the problem that you have ...but I am link-ing you to the site where you will find all drivers for your model ... so ..if you are running windows vista ....just go to control panel and uninstall the driver from remove programs .... then you either install the new driver ...and after that run the wizard from add new hardware ...or it will prompt you for a driver after you uninstall the old one ...I dont know if its a build in or not web cam ...anyway the procedure is the same ...you will be also be prompt for restart pav dv6000 drivers
This is known Webcam issue in DV6000 notebooks. To resolve or narrow down the issue, we have to check few things.
First open Device Manager.
Please follow these steps to open Device Manager:
1. Right Click on 'My Computer' icon on Desktop and choose Properties. 2. The System properties Window opens. 3. Click Hardware tab and then click the Device Manager button.
Expand + Imagining Devices and check if the HP Webcam is listed under it.
If Webcam is not listed there, then you have to contact HP to get the BIOS update.
If it is listed there, right click on it and select Disable. Again right click on it and select Enable.
Now open any applications like Quickplay and check if Webcam is working or not.
Please reply me if that won't resolve the issue, I can provide more work arounds
