Spanish Steps and Piazza de Spagna, Rome

While in Rome, Guy and his crew scouted for some of the most beautiful and iconic locations that the Eternal City has to offer.

In one scene, CIA agent Napoleon Solo, played by Henry Cavill, meets up with KGB agent, Illya Kuryakin (Armie Hammer) in the picturesque Piazza de Spagna at the base of the Spanish Steps.

The pair, who have teamed up to stop a mysterious international criminal organisation, during the Cold War, were spotted filming a particularly tense scene at the tourist favourite hotspot.

And of course, no Roman film shoot would be complete without a Vespa - and a handsome man riding it.

The Spanish Steps are particularly well-known among American audiences today, after first being shown in the 1953 film, Roman Holiday, which starred Audrey Hepburn and Gregory Peck.

The staircase was designed by little-known Francesco de Sanctis as part of a competition in 1717, connecting the Piazza di Spagna at the base and Piazza Trinità dei Monti, dominated by the Trinità dei Monti church at the top.

Another well-known Roman landmark, the Fontana della Barcaccia, is a fountain situated at the bottom of the steep steps, which was built between 1627 and 1629.

A great deal of filming also took place at the city's Grand Plaza Hotel, with cast members such as Hugh Grant, as well as Armie Hammer and Henry Cavill, having been seen there.

Henry and Armie looked particularly dapper while shooting a scene on a terrace overlooking the historic centre.

The luxury five-star hotel is located on Via del Corso, quite near to the Spanish Steps and the busy street of Via Condotti.

The hotel is a popular filming location, given its ideal location and stunning views.

Although it's been recently updated, the Plaza has reserved many of its original features, such as the high ceilings, marble bathrooms and beautiful private terraces.

Other pivotal scenes were filmed along the well-known streets surrounding the posh hotel, such as those where Henry rode his Vespa through the picturesque cobblestone roads.

Bay of Naples

In Naples, the production team used the underground tunnels at the Fonderia Iron Works to depict the dungeons of the Vinciguerra island compound - perfect for a nuclear physicist with his own undergound lab.

And the city, with its picturesque Bay, was the perfect location for impressive Italian exteriors and offered the added bonus of getting the cast and crew out of busy Rome.

Cameramen hopped onto inflatable boats in hopes of making the most of the stunning water views, filming the cast walking along the crystal clear sea.

The Gulf of Naples is a nine-mile wide gulf located along the south-western coast of Italy, which opens up into the Mediterranean Sea.

Although many of the area's ruins were buried for centuries beneath volcanic debris, the city's archaeological sites are a must-visit for any tourist.

The cast filmed in Pozzuoli, which is a city commune known for its Temple of Serapis, a marketplace that is also considered the city's symbol.

And, of course, we can't forget about Mount Vesuvius, which is visible in the background from just about anywhere along the coastline.

Baia Castle, Naples

Perched on a steep cliff overlooking the Mediterranean, Baia Castle was long thought to be a summer residence of Julius Caesar.

Since then, however, it's been discovered that the impressive fortress actually belonged to Emperor Nero.

Outside, the terraces offer unparalleled views, while inside, the Archaeological Museum of Campi Flegrei has taken over a stretch of rooms displaying ancient artefacts found in the area.

During the filming of The Man from U.N.C.L.E., Henry and Guy were spotted just steps from the ancient castle, which could easily be the starting (or ending) point for many a secretive spy mission.

As well as being used for protection, the towering building also hosted visitors, was a place of study for those learning about the volcanoes in the area and, in some instances, was also the site of grisly executions.

And when you're watching in cinemas, keep an eye out for the Domitian-Nerva, the only equestrian bronze statue to survive from ancient times, and a Roman dining room as it might have looked during Claudius' reign - two of the house's most noteworthy features.

The Man from U.N.C.L.E opens in cinemas on August 14.
