A baby who was left abandoned 17 years ago in a public toilet block is searching for her birth mother.

The newborn, who was just hours old at the time, was found in a Swan Hill park - north of Melbourne in rural Victoria - in 1998.

Dubbed by media outlets at the time as 'Sophie', her discovery sparked a widespread search across the country for her parents.

The child, who is now 17 years old, has appealed for her biological mother to come forward in an emotional interview on Channel Nine's A Current Affair.

Sophie told the program she was desperate to meet her birth mother and forgive her for what happened.

'It would fill that hole in my heart. It would make me so happy,' she said.

Sophie's date of birth is thought to be April 9, 1998.

On an adoption reunion site, the 17-year-old revealed she was living with her new parents.

'I am happy in a family but I need to know about my birth and who gave birth to me,' Sophie wrote.

In the months after she was found, The Age reported Sophie was born three weeks premature.

She was discovered with pink clothes on, and was described as having a head of flaxen hair and blue eyes.

At the time, Sophie was taken in by Victoria's Department of Human Services who put her into foster care.
