রতন বালার কথা শেষ হলে পাশের লোকটা বলল, " আমার নাম আদর মিঞা। পড়তাম একটা প্রাইভেট মেডিকেল কলেজে। মেধাবী হোক অথবা মেধাহীন উভয়কেই লাখ লাখ টাকা দিয়ে প্রাইভেট মেডিকেল কলেজে পড়তে হয়। আমাকেও পড়তে হয়েছে সেভাবেই। কিন্তু ডাক্তারি পাশ করার পর পুলিশের তদন্তে প্রকাশিত হয়, আমাদের মেডিকেল কলেজটাই অবৈধ। তাই অবৈধ কলেজের সার্টিফিকেট দিয়ে সরকারি হসপিটালে চাকরি না পেয়ে অবশেষে ঢাকাতে একটা ফার্মেসিতে (ঔষধের দোকান) কর্মচারীর চাকরি নিই। একদিন বড় হুজুর গেলেন ফার্মেসিতে ঔষধ কেনার জন্য। তিনি কথা - বার্তা শোনে আমার শিক্ষাগত যোগ্যতা জিজ্ঞেস করলেন। আমি আমার শিক্ষাগত যোগ্যতা বললাম। তখন বড় হুজুর আমাকে এই স্থানে নিয়ে এলেন। তখন থেকে আমি এই ঘাঁটির সবার ডাক্তার হিসেবে কাজ করি। মূলত বড় হুজুরই আমার শিক্ষাগত যোগ্যতার মূল্যায়ন করেছেন। "
আদর মিঞার কথা শেষ হলে পাশে দাঁড়িয়ে থাকা লোকটা বলল, " আমি লাবলু মিঞা। প্রাইভেট ইউনিভার্সিটি থেকে এমবিএ পাশ করার পর একটা কোম্পানিতে চাকরি নিয়েছিলাম। কিন্তু বেতন কম হওয়ার কারণে মালিককে বলেছিলাম, ' স্যার প্রাইভেট ইউনিভার্সিটি থেকে এতো টাকা খরচ করে পাশ করলাম। কিন্তু আমাকে আপনি এতো কম বেতন দেন কেন ? ' তখন মালিক বলেছিলেন, ' তোমাকে প্রাইভেট ইউনিভার্সিটিতে কে পড়িয়েছে ? ' আমি বললাম, ' আমার বাবা পড়িয়েছেন। ' মালিক বললেন, ' তাহলে তোমার বাবাকে গিয়ে বল, এতো টাকা খরচ করিয়ে তোমাকে কেন প্রাইভেট ইউনিভার্সিটিতে পড়িয়েছেন ? এখন কেন বেশি বেতন পাচ্ছ না ? ' এই কথা বলে আমাকে কোম্পানির মালিক চাকরি থেকে বের করে দিলেন। আমি তখন হতাশ হয়ে বুড়িগঙ্গার ওপারে বসে স্টিমার দেখছিলাম। তখন বড় হুজুর আমাকে এই ঘাঁটিতে নিয়ে এলেন। আমি এখন এই ঘাঁটির আয় - ব্যয়ের হিসাব করি। "
পাশের লোকটা বলল, " আমার নাম ছদরদ্দি। সরকারি কলেজ থেকে পাশ করে গেলাম বেসরকারি কোম্পানিতে চাকরি করতে। ইন্টারভিউ নেয়ার সময় আমাকে কোম্পানির জিএম সাহেব বললেন, ' কলেজে পড়ার জন্য কত টাকা খরচ করেছ ?' আমি বললাম, ' কলেজ হোস্টেলে খাওয়া, প্রতি বছর ভর্তি, রেজিস্ট্রেশন ও ফর্ম ফিলাপ ফি। ' জিএম সাহেব বললেন, ' খাতা, কলম ও বই কি মাগনা পেয়েছ ?' আমি বললাম, ' বাজার থেকে কিনেছি। ' তখন জিএম সাহেব বলল, ' এই সকল খরচ বাদ দিলে বাকি খরচ তো সরকারই বহন করেছে। অর্থাৎ সরকারি কলেজ থেকে অল্প খরচেই তুমি পাশ করেছ। তাহলে বেতন কেমন চাও ? ' আমি বেতনের কথা বললে জিএম সাহেব বললেন, ' পাগল নাকি ? সরকারি কলেজ থেকে পাশ করে এতো টাকা বেতন চায় ?
