HUNTSVILLE, Ala — Businesses are reopening, and people are heading back to work. But it's still a hard time for so many people.
Since the pandemic, the Food Bank of North Alabama has seen a 66% increase in the amount of people needing food assistance. That increase has been consistent.
In the first two months of the crisis, they distributed nearly 2 million meals -- which averages 30 thousand meals a day.
Food Bank of North Alabama Executive Director Shirley Schofield said, "There's still some small businesses and some service industries that are a little bit slower. They can't come back full speed yet, so we know there's still going to be some need there."
The food bank is now getting in more produce from farmers through the Coronavirus Food Assistance Program. They got their first distribution Tuesday, which includes both fresh vegetables and fruit.
