Man Gets DUI on Riding Mower: Police

Michigan man had affixed flashlights to his John Deer lawn mower and was towing a homemade trailer when deputies stopped him Friday night.

A western Michigan man putzing along a county road on his John Deere lawn mower was arrested about 9 p.m. Friday after police stopped him on multiple violations.

Two Van Buren County deputies were on routine patrol on County Road 657 in Antwerp Township when they spotted the man, the Detroit Free Press and WXMI-TV report.

He was towing a homemade trailer behind his lawn mower, using only a pair of flashlights mounted to the front of the implement to illuminate the road under the mostly dark sky.

When the deputies shined a light in his face of the 36-year-old Lawton man, whose name has not been released, they noticed he was “highly intoxicated,” WXMI said.

He will be formally charged with drunken driving, his third such violation, according to the reports.

While deputies were investigating the man’s unusual mode of highway transportation, they had to shine lights on the mower to make it visible to oncoming traffic, thus avoiding a collision, WXMI said.

The man was taken to jail and the lawnmower was impounded.
