3 Things to Pick Up at the Market This Weekend

October 25, 2014

Here at Food52, we like to talk about what we’re buying at the market: what’s new, what’s exciting, the market's best finds. This is our water cooler talk. And now, we want you to join in.

Quince

This week the Food52 editors' mantra is: Cook some fruit. Start with apples. Sarah's making Dorie Greenspan's Custardy Apple Squares, while Kenzi's contemplating a caramel-laced apple pie. Kristen's sautéing apples in brown sugar and butter, then piling them on French toast along with some crème fraîche. (Time to up your Saturday morning breakfast game.)

But to make sure we don't eat apples for every meal, here's what else we can’t wait to pick up this week -- and why you should be adding it to your bag, too.

Quince

Quince
Put them in a bowl and just stare at them for awhile. Paint them if you're so inclined. Make Quince Membrillo or use them in a savory preparation with lamb or duck. Sheela's making Quince Tarte Tatin and we've also been roasting them in a sugary syrup with vanilla and cardamom -- some will make a sweet, rosy addition to a cheese tray, and others are bound for a galette (with more apples).

Cranberries
They deserve to come out and play before Thanksgiving. Candy your cranberries, add them to a quick bread, or follow Marian's plan to bake them into a pie with sage

Broccoli
Plan a whole week's worth of dinners around broccoli -- to balance out all of the fruit of course. Rachel's making a big pot of charred broccoli and lentils, but if you haven't overdosed on fruit yet, we also recommend combining broccoli with our beloved apples in soup

Tell us: What are you picking up at your farmers market?

Already planned to visit the farmer's market tomorrow, for small red potatoes, cauliflower, leeks, sugar pumpkins. I guess I'll be picking up some cranberries too (cranberry sour cream coffee cake w/ choc chips)!!

Coffee cake is always a good idea!
