Man Charged With Taking Dog From Animal Shelter

A Woodstock man is accused of taking a dog from the Cherokee County Animal Shelter.

Jason Lacy, 38, has been charged with one count of burglary by the Cherokee Sheriff’s Office, the agency said in a press release.

According to the agency, Lacy removed a black labrador mix on Sunday from the facility, which sits on Univeter Road in unincorporated Canton.

Lacy was able to enter the shelter by breaking the glass on the back door of the building, sheriff’s office spokesperson Lt. Jay Baker said.

The sheriff’s office’s spokesperson said the dog was surrendered on Saturday, Oct. 11 to the shelter by Lacy’s neighbor.

“It was turned into the shelter as a stray, but previously belonged to a family member of the person who surrendered it,” Baker added, noting the family member moved away.

However, Sue Garcia, Cherokee County Animal Shelter Director, added that when questioned by the sheriff’s office, the woman who turned the animal in admitted it belonged to her.

The dog, she added, is in “good condition” and is between one and two years old. 

Sheriff’s office detectives learned Lacy, who was arrested on Tuesday, found out the dog was handed over to the shelter and wanted the dog for himself. The black labrador mix was recovered by detectives at Lacy’s home in Woodstock.

When confronted by detectives, Baker said Lacy “admitted to entering the shelter and taking the dog.”

Lacy has been released from the Cherokee Adult Detention Center on an $11,200 bond.
