The Story
Every day, from harvest to plate, delicious food is being wasted. 40% of the food produced in Canada is never eaten while over 800,000 people are undernourished. Even here in the Metro Vancouver region, over one-third of the household food thrown away could have been eaten.
Feeding the 5000 Vancouver puts the topic of food waste back on the table. We’re hosting a FREE LUNCH featuring fresh, delicious food from industry donors. Everything on the menu would otherwise have been wasted. Those attending will get a tasty free lunch, an appreciation of food waste in our region, a connection with those already taking action, and some inspiring ideas for reducing food waste in their own lives.
The first ever Feeding the 5000 event was held in London’s Trafalgar Square in 2009. Since then Feeding the 5000 events have been held worldwide; from Paris to Dublin, Manchester, Sydney, Amsterdam and Brussels. In each location the events have had a lasting impact and catalyzed action on food waste on a local and national level. The first Feeding the 5000 event in North America was held in Oakland in 2014.
On Wednesday, May 27th, we will host the first Feeding the 5000 event in Canada, here in our home city of Vancouver.
