Driving for the first time with my teenager

I went out tonight with my teenage son to let him drive us to Target then to Walgreens.  Mind you, this wasn't his very first time, but its MY first time driving with him.  He is still very new to this, and let me tell you it was memorable, but in a good way.

It was dark out of course, and he had never pulled out of our driveway onto the street, which is the main thoroughfare in the neighborhood.  He was a little jerky and not completely in control, but if you don't give them a chance, how will they ever learn, right?  He wanted to get a new CD from Target, and there was only one left.  I needed to get a couple things from Walgreens, so off we went.

He needs to get a bit better about slowing down on the different curves we encounter, and that was the most nervewracking of all.  He also was lucky or unlucky enough to get more than his fair share of yellow lights tonight.  Again, those are good practice too.  He tends to get a bit nervous around lights in general.  So off we went to practice all the more.

Getting to practice parking in parking lots was also a good thing.  Getting the idea of what the speed limits are in all the different areas is good too.  I was so proud of him for how calm he was through it all.  I opted to allow him to keep the music on, as he will be listening to music when he drives, if I know him at all.

He was tempted to give into this guy on our tail, who wanted to go faster than  the speed limit, even a bit over.  He held his ground, as we passed a police officer we hadn't seen.  Don't you know, WE would have been the ones to get a ticket if he has sped up for that guy, who soon backed WAY off as he also saw the copper.

Gotta love those teenagers!  Patience and love goes very far, that and me remembering how I was at that age.  Since time is flying, I am trying to enjoy all those little moments.  Jobs and life come hard and fast soon enough.  I am proud of my son.
