His interactive workshop draws on the ESRC funded project “Teaching for Digital Citizenship: Data Ethics in the Classroom and Beyond” at the University of Glasgow, which brings together teachers, policy makers, philosophers of education, and the Ed Tech sector to co-design resources to help young people recover a sense of autonomy as they navigate increasingly complex digital challenges in their lives.

The core idea of the project is that critical information literacy is not another topic or learning objective to cover, but an approach that can underpin learning in a range of disciplines – we are working with teachers of RME, Citizenship, Computer Science, Maths, History, Art and Design in schools across the 4 nations of the UK. The workshop aims to gather teacher feedback on the feasibility and desirability of incorporating three principles in teaching for digital citizenship:

• Critical – any teaching about or with technology should help learners to recognise that the affordances of the technology are dependent on historical, economic, and data processing conditions which are contingent and changeable;
• Information – young people have a right to information integrity, and schools have a duty to help them develop the information literacy skills to be able to exercise that right;
• Literacy – drawing on emancipatory understandings of literacy, learners (and teachers) have a right to experience the “joy at being the cause” (Groos 1901) of their outcomes and outputs. Schools have a duty to equip students with the technical skills and the awareness of their own agency to enable digital social production (Benkler 2006) to take place.
