Inevitably geopolitics has been the talk of the conference with many of presentations dealing with the impact of the trade wars – and real wars – on shipping volumes and rates. Thomas Cullen picks up this theme in his briefing, looking at the implications of Israel’s attacks on Iran for shipping across the region. Whilst there are obvious risks, he believes that the medium-term prospect could be that the Red Sea becomes less hazardous if the Houthis lose support from their primary backer, Iran. Staying in the Middle East, our analyst Shruti Sasidharan writes that the race to dominate the Gulf’s logistics and road freight market is intensifying as global players ramp up investments in the region. Referred to in the Agility Emerging Markets Index as a ‘beacon of stability’, logistics providers are betting on the Gulf’s long term prospects and looking beyond the present crises. Back in Europe, one of France’s largest logistics companies, Groupe Heppner, has published its results. Although revealing little about its profitability, management are still in expansion mode through acquisition both in its home market as well as internationally, providing some impetus to its growth.
