Samuel Labi receives ASCE Wilbur S. Smith Award

The Transportation and Development Institute (T&DI) of ASCE has announced Samuel Labi, Professor of Civil Engineering, as the 2025 recipient of the Wilbur S. Smith Award. This award is given to a person who has made "special contributions to the enhancement of the civil engineer's role in highway engineering."

Samuel Labi, Professor of Civil Engineering, received the award plaque for the Wilbur S. Smith Award at the International Conference on Transportation and Development in Glendale Arizona, June 9, 2025. The award was presented by American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) President Marsha Anderson Bomar, supported by Transportation and Development Institute (T&DI) President, Scott Murrell; Jennifer Toth, Director of the Arizona Department of Transportation; and Amer Sultan, Director of T&DI. The award is given to a person who has made "special contributions to the enhancement of the civil engineer's role in highway engineering."

Professor Labi ‘s highway engineering contributions span a number of areas including: evaluation of novel materials for highway construction; highway planning, financing, design, construction, maintenance, and management; algorithms, human factors, and infrastructure related to prospective operations of autonomous vehicles on highways; and systems engineering applications to highway development.
