The EU's ongoing LIFE Programme, a cornerstone initiative advancing the European Green Deal's objectives, is the sole European programme dedicated exclusively to the environment, nature conservation, and climate action, LIFE has made a remarkable impact over its 32-year history, funding over 6,000 projects. With a budget of EUR 5.4 billion for the 2021-2027 period, of which over EUR 500 millioin is dedicated for the 2025 call period, LIFE continues to drive a shift towards a sustainable, circular and climate-neutral economy across Europe.

Grant opportunities

Grants in the LIFE Programme typically range between €1 to €10 million for projects spanning 3 to 5 years. The maximum EU co-financing rates vary from 60% to 95%, depending on project type and topic, making it an attractive prospect for diverse stakeholders committed to ecological innovation.

Who can apply?

Applications are open to public and private legal entities registered in the EU and associated third countries (Moldova, North Macedonia, and Ukraine), including public bodies, private organizations, non-profits, and research institutions. Projects can be submitted individually or as part of consortiums, emphasizing collaboration across European partnerships.

Areas of focus

The LIFE Programme funds several key areas through different types of projects:

Standard Action Projects (SAPs):

  • Nature and biodiversity - €153.4 million
  • Circular economy and quality of life - €73 million
  • Climate change mitigation and adaptation - €61.5 million
  • New European Bauhaus - €4 million
  • Environmental governance - €7.5 million

Coordination and Support Action Grants (CSAs):

  • Clean energy transition - €91.4 million

Strategic Integrated Projects (SNAPs/SIPs): €158 million

Technical Assistance Grants:  €30 million

The LIFE Programme aims to facilitate the transition to a sustainable, circular, energy-efficient, and renewable energy-based economy that is climate-neutral and resilient. By focusing on the protection, restoration, and improvement of environmental quality—including air, water, and soil—LIFE seeks to halt and reverse biodiversity loss while addressing ecosystem degradation.
