WISCONSIN - More than 900 miles of county forest roads across 24 counties in Wisconsin will be improved in 2024.

Governor Tony Evers and the WisDOT announced that $320,600 will go toward improving the roads.

“Our county forest roads are an important part of how we make our abundant natural resources more accessible for outdoor recreation, business, and tourism," said Governor Evers.

In Northwoods counties, funds were allocated as follows:

  • Florence: $11,524.15
  • Langlade: $5,901.43
  • Lincoln: $9,493.14
  • Marathon: $2,257.45
  • Oneida: $13,534.26
  • Price: $2,173.84
  • Taylor: $6,194.06
  • Vilas: $16,850.76

The full list of allocated funds can be found HERE.

WisDOT manages the state’s County Forest Road Aids program, which was created to help pay for costs for the improvement and maintenance of public roads in county forests.

Since Governor Evers took office, WisDOT has improved over 7,000 miles of road and over 1,700 bridges.

To qualify for the state funding, roads need to have a 16-foot surface width and a 20-foot roadway width, be located within county forests, be part of a comprehensive county forest land-use plan and be open and used for travel.

The road cannot be a state or county trunk highway or town road and cannot receive General Transportation Aids (GTA).

GTA distributes funding to local governments from state-collected transportation revenues, helping offset the cost of county and municipal road construction, maintenance, traffic and other transportation-related costs.
