We have two volunteering roles available to choose from.
Volunteering roles
Animal Ambassador
The Colchester Zoological Society Animal Ambassador programme provides you with a fantastic opportunity to develop your knowledge of endangered species and their conservation, as well as the chance to experience the workings of a zoo environment.
Responsibilities
- Meeting and engaging with new people
- Assisting with pop-up activities
- Answering visitor questions
- Assisting with special events
Requirements
- At least 17 years old
- Available for a minimum of 1 day a week
- Good organisation skills
- Friendly and approachable
- Willingness to meet new people
- Good interpersonal skills
- Ability to work as a team
- Experience in teaching, training, demonstrating or presenting is desirable but not essential
- Training will be provided
We are looking for anyone interested in giving their time across the summer holidays but would also like to hear form people that want to commit to a longer volunteering period.

Zoo Host
The Colchester Zoological Society Zoo Host programme provides you with a fantastic opportunity to develop your knowledge, as well as the chance to experience the workings of a zoo environment and share practical information with our guests.
Responsibilities
- Answering visitor questions
- Providing visitors with feedback methods
- Supporting staff with queue management
- Assisting with special events
Requirements
- At least 18 years old
- Available for a minimum of 1 day a week
- Good organisation skills
- Friendly and approachable
- Willingness to meet new people
- Excellent interpersonal skills
- Ability to work as a team
- Willingness to be outdoors in all weathers
- Knowledge of the zoo is desirable but not essential
- Training will be provided
