LOUISVILLE, Ky.--Sophomore
Evann Waschuk and freshman
Michelle McFerran led the way for the Knights as Bellarmine's women's tennis team picked up a 7-2 victory over visiting Campbellsville University on Saturday.
Both Waschuk and McFerran picked up two points as they both won their singles and doubles matches. "I thought Evann's win at number one singles was huge for us and for her personally today," said Bellarmine Coach
John Mican. "She has been playing great tennis but just coming up short against some of the best players in the region." McFerran picked up her team-leading 16th win on the season.
The Knights started strong by sweeping the doubles competition. Court one saw two-time Kentucky State High School doubles champion Caitlin Hanely team with McFerran for the Knights. The duo started slowly, falling behind 4-1, but roared back to win the final 7 games for an 8-4 victory. "Caitlin is a force on the doubles court," said Mican. "The freshmen are so good at figuring things out as they go and making adjustments during the match."
On court two, Waschuk teamed with
Hannah-Rose Hagan for the victory. "Evann and
Hannah-Rose Hagan seemed to have jelled as a doubles team and move so well together as a team it keeps their opponents off balance," Mican said.
Number three doubles saw the return of junior
Jamie Claeys, who had been out nursing an ankle injury. The Greenwood, Ind., native teamed with senior
Abby Day to win the third doubles point with some clutch serving in pressure situations.
In singles,
Caitlin Hanley and
Hannah-Rose Hagan put in great efforts for the Knights but both lost in third set super tie-breaks.
The final two singles wins came from
Abby Dorton at number five who was down 4-1 only to re-group and win 12 of the next 14 games. The Knights' final point on the day came when
Elizabeth Crush celebrated her birthday with a win at number six singles.
