Things to understand about nuclear waste: 1) Required storage time (where 10,000 or 100,000 year figures come from) is generally calculated based on the amount of time required for the material to be as radioactive or less radioactive as natural uranium ore. 2) Transuranic elements are primarily responsible for the long storage time, separation and burning (via fast reactor or similar method) would reduce “necessary” storage time (as calculated in (1)) by orders of magnitude, ~100s of years. 3) The nuclear industry is the only industry to take responsibility for its waste throughout the duration of its life. What other industry is required to earmark billions for waste management whenever they wish to open a power generation facility? 4) The waste really isn’t waste, the majority of used nuclear fuel can be repurposed, unburnt uranium can be reused as fuel, transuranics and fission products can be used in a number of applications in medical, industrial, and energy fields. 5) It’s all about the money, historically it has been cheaper to store used nuclear fuel and purchase new nuclear fuel that to recycle or process the used nuclear fuel.
