About the conference

Lesley has worked in the energy industry throughout her career. Starting originally with British Gas in Newcastle she moved to London and worked on both gas and power projects in the UK and abroad. She later joined the Sustainable Energy Association, where she spent around eight years campaigning on sustainability and Net Zero, before joining Electrical Safety First in 2020 – a place where she was able to combine her twin passions for safety and sustainability.
Lesley was awarded an Order of the British Empire Medal in the 2020 New Year Honours list for services to UK energy markets and clean growth.
Susannah Streeter, Broadcaster and Analyst
Susannah provides award-winning analysis to the world’s media as part of her role as Head of Money and Markets for the UK’s largest retail investment platform, Hargreaves Lansdown.
As BBC anchor, with a career spanning two decades in broadcasting, she presented flagship global business shows on TV and radio, and now speaks at major conferences around the world, focusing on macro-economics, energy, sustainability, defence and artificial intelligence.

With over 20 years' experience in non-destructive and destructive analysis, Farah supports her clients in risk assessments, crisis management, product design, manufacturing processes, recalls and failure analysis.
Farah holds expertise in the application of microscopy (CT, SEM, Optical) and mechanical testing applied across a wide range of industries, including additive manufacturing, pharmaceuticals, medical devices, consumer products, electronics, automotive, medical forensics, aerospace, food and beverage, national space agencies, batteries and mining. She is the founder and President of the International Society ToScA and sits on a number of national and international technical committees.
Martyn Allen
Technical Advisor, Electrical Safety First
With over 40 years’ experience in electrical installation safety and product safety, Martyn is a strong consumer safety advocate.
Martyn has represented consumer safety interests on a range of British, European and International Committees. Originally trained as an underground electrician with British Coal, he worked in engineering risk management with Rayal and SunAlliance for 16 years, before joining Electrical Safety Council (the forerunner to Electrical Safety First) in 2006. He is a chartered electrical engineer and corporate member of the Institution of Engineering Technology (IET).
Louise Baxter MBE
CEO, National Independent Consumer Organisation
Louise is a passionate advocate for social justice and safeguarding, with over 20 years’ experience supporting vulnerable communities and driving change across regulatory and public service sectors.
Nationally recognised consumer protection leader in, regulation, fraud, scams, and consumer vulnerability. Louises work spans across sectors including finance, telecoms, housing, and energy. Louise serves as Chair of two national Consumer Protection Panels and as a Non-Executive Director at TrustMark and The Property Ombudsman. Organisations committed to building safer, more inclusive services. A confident and trusted media contributor, she uses her platform to champion opportunity, resilience, and equality, highlighting the challenges many face and the things we can do to make a change.

Aiming to build a national movement to make consumer rights engaging and accessible, delivering expert accessible information to ensure individuals and organisations know how to protect the most at risk. Louise was awarded an MBE for Protecting Vulnerable Consumers from Financial Abuse in 2017.
Dr Tom Bell
UK Country Lead, Customer Trust and External Relations, Amazon
Dr Thomas Bell is the UK Country Lead within the Customer Trust and External Relations Team at Amazon.
His portfolio includes product safety, scam prevention and anti-counterfeiting. Prior to taking up this role in January 2025, he led on Regulatory Engagement at Amazon for UK and EU on product safety. Tom has a degree and Ph.D in Chemistry and has worked in the product safety space for over a decade performing previous roles at both the UK product safety regulator, Office for Product Safety and Standards, and consumer group, Which?.
Dr George Borlase
PH.D., P.E. Senior Vice President, Standards Development, UL Standards & Engagement
George leads the drive to initiate, develop, and publish new and updated safety standards, and ensures that ULSE’s standards activities actively include diverse stakeholders.
He has worked on safety issues for over 25 years, including at the US Consumer Product Safety Commission, the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, and as an active-duty Officer in the US Coast Guard. He earned a Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering and is a registered Professional Engineer.

Nicola Christie
Professor of Transport Safety, Centre for Transport Studies, UCL
Nicola has a background in psychology and specialises in road safety.
She started her career at Transport Research Laboratory (1985-2001) then joined the Postgraduate Medical school at the University of Surrey (2001-2011) joining UCL in 2011. She is currently President of the London Road Safety Council and is a member of the government's Scientific Advisory Committee to help develop the new road safety strategy. She is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute for Highways and Transportation, a member of the Department for Transports College of Experts and an International Fellow for the International Association for Traffic and Safety Science in Japan.
Geraldine Cosh MSc

Geraldine is an experienced and committed safety professional with extensive experience in the areas of injury prevention, risk management, and project management.
She has been working in product safety for 20 years. She was the technical author for 3 British Standards (PAS 7055; PAS 7050 & PAS 7100), an expert for EU CASP (Coordinated Activities for the Safety of Products) for Injury data (2020), Risk assessment and crisis management (2021) and a Senior Product Safety Expert for EU SPEAC (Safe non-food consumer products in the EU and China) project.
Geraldine is an expert speaker on the Kids in Danger toolkit (Phase 2) and has supported CTSI with the development of the BCCPS: Business Certificate of competence in Product safety. Geraldine is also on the Board of the Society of Product Safety Professionals.
Phillip Darnton OBE
Chair, Bicycle Association
Phillip spent much of his career with Unilever plc, the Anglo-Dutch multi-national, in marketing and general management positions, latterly as Managing Director of Unilever’s operations in Brazil, and adviser to the Unilever Board on global strategy.
Phillip was involved in the world of cycling, initially as chairman and chief executive of Raleigh, and as a member of the Government’s National Cycling Strategy Board.
Subsequently he was appointed as Chair of Cycling England. Phillip is the Chair of the Bicycle Association; Chair of the Department for Transport’s Cycle Rail Working Group; a member of the Walking and Cycling Alliance, and of the Stakeholder Advisory Group for the DfT’s Cycling and Walking Investment Strategy (CWIS).
He is the Patron of the Bikeability Trust, a government-funded charity which provides basic cycle training to 500,000 children each year. He was awarded by the Queen with the Order of the British Empire (OBE) for services to cycling.

Kate Dearden
Minister for Employment Rights and Consumer Protection
Kate Dearden MP was appointed Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State in the Department for Business and Trade on 7 September 2025.
She was elected as the MP for Halifax in July 2024. Prior to Parliament, she worked for the Community Trade Union. The Minister was previously Assistant Whip, House of Commons between 18 July 2024 and 7 September 2025.
Yselkla Farmer
Chief Executive, BEAMA
Yselkla has worked within the industry for over a decade, working across the sectors BEAMA represent from EV Infrastructure, Smart Grids, Connected Homes and IOT products.
Following her position as Director of Public Affairs at BEAMA Yselkla took over the role as CEO in September 2023. With a background in Climate Science and Environmental Management Yselkla brings with her a clear understanding of the climate emergency and a passion to drive change. This is echoed in BEAMAs strong leadership and support for industrial decarbonisation as they work to bring together the whole supply chain for electrical products to reduce emissions for the UK energy sector.
Yselkla is a strong advocate for collaboration and community and this reflects in BEAMAs approach to member and supply chain engagement as they work to facilitate growth in key low carbon technology sectors vital to the global energy transition.
Tara Joe
Public Affairs Manager, Electrical Safety First
Tara leads the charity's public affairs activity in Westminster.
She has worked in politics throughout her career, starting as a Senior Parliamentary Researcher for a Member of Parliament. Prior to joining Electrical Safety First, she worked in agencies delivering strategic public affairs advice to a range of clients across sustainability, housing and technology sectors.
Karter Kane
Policy and Public Affairs Advisor, Electrical Safety First
Karter joined Electrical Safety First as a Policy and Public Affairs Advisor in January 2022 after completing her Master’s degree in politics at Strathclyde University.
She is based in Glasgow and works to develop government relations and policies across Scotland and Northern Ireland. Since joining the charity, she has been involved in campaigns around product safety on online marketplaces, electrical safety checks in the private rented sector in Northern Ireland and expanding consumer awareness of electrical safety risks.
Sharni Keating
Research and Outreach Officer, Electrical Safety First
Sharni joined Electrical Safety First in September 2023, after completing her Master’s degree in Criminological Research at the University of Stirling.
Based in our Scotland office, Sharni works on a variety of research projects and also supports the management of the annual Electrical Safety Fund. Her current work includes investigating the electrical safety challenges faced by people living in alternative housing types, and leading a collaborative research project with Public Health Scotland, focusing on injuries caused by electrical products.
David McKnight
Head of partnerships, UL Standards & Engagement
David develops partnerships to share safety science knowledge and advance advocacy with corporate leaders, trade association leaders, policymakers, and consumers.
He has spent several years building and expanding partnerships in various roles. Before joining UL Standards & Engagement, David served as Vice President of Business Relationships and Partnerships for The Manufacturing Institute, the nonprofit workforce and education partner of The National Association of Manufacturers. Prior to that position, he led corporate relations and communications at the Agricultural Retailers Association, a trade association focused on legislative and regulatory issues.
David holds a B.A. in political science from Hampden-Sydney College in Virginia.
John McNulty
Director, Product Safety and Compliance Engineering, Consumer Hardware Division, Google.
Prior to his current role and also at Google, John managed Failure Analysis, Data Analytics, Reliability Labs, and Field Reliability Engineering.
Prior to Google, he was a Principal Engineer in Exponent's Materials and Corrosion Engineering Practice, providing consulting support on a range of Failure Analysis, Reliability, Safety, and Product Liability issues. He has over 35 years of engineering experience in most end-use markets. He received his B.S. in Materials Science and Engineering from UC Berkeley, and his Ph.D. in Materials Engineering from UC Santa Barbara; he is also a licensed Professional Engineer (stress analysis) and a Certified Reliability Engineer.
Marcia Nightingale
Deputy Director for Products and Sectors Regulation, Office for Product Safety and Standards (OPSS)
With a career spanning local, national and international regulatory environments, Marcia brings extensive experience and insight into the evolving landscape of product safety and compliance.
In her current role, Marcia leads OPSS's regulatory and enforcement activities, championing a risk-based approach to support compliance. She oversees a wide range of interventions designed to maximise impact while minimising burdens on businesses. Her remit covers the safety, environmental, security, accuracy and international dimensions of products—from toys to tumble dryers, cosmetics to charge points, and e-bikes to electronic goods.
Luke Osborne
Technical Director, Electrical Safety First
Luke leads both the electrical product safety and the electrical installation safety teams, ensuring that products and installations are safe and fit-for-purpose.
Electrical Safety First conducts investigations in these areas, with the aim of providing credible evidence and solutions where problems are identified. The charity also aims to influence stakeholders to elicit change and to drive safer consumer behaviour.
Luke has a long history in engineering and sustainability and previously worked as the Energy and Emerging Technologies Solutions Advisor for ECA.

Tatianna Rodrigues
Research and Outreach Officer, Electrical Safety First.
Tatianna’s goal is to that ensure traditionally excluded groups become involved in work affecting their lives.
Her collaborative work includes co-producing a peer-led research toolkit with the GLA to facilitate meaningful engagement across London"s diverse communities; leading an evaluation of the BBC"s UK-wide Children in Need WeMove project; and contributing to a National Lottery Fund consortium evaluation of the #iWill Movement’s impact on youth social action.
Tatianna holds a PhD in Human Geography from UCL, exploring the lived experience of (un)documented migrants in Barbados. She previously served with the US Peace Corps, supporting grassroots organisations to embed community initiatives in Morocco.
Graham Russell MBE
Chief Executive, UK Office for Product Safety and Standards
Graham is Chief Executive of the UK Office for Product Safety and Standards, part of the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy.
The Office for Product Safety and Standards (OPSS) was created in January 2018 and regulates a wide range of products with a focus on their safety and integrity, from design to disposal. OPSS is the Government lead for standards and accreditation and market surveillance coordination as well as leading on good regulatory delivery including the Regulators’ Code and operating Primary Authority which 100,000 businesses are participating in, giving them access to assured advice.
Graham’s career and experience has been as a regulator, first in local government where he led a number of regulatory services and created new regulatory functions responsible for animal health and welfare and claims management. After working with government teams supporting UK regulatory reform reviews, Graham was appointed the first chief executive of the Local Better Regulation Office (LBRO) and established LBRO as a pioneer in the concept of regulatory delivery.
Graham led a range of initiatives to test new approaches to the effective delivery of regulation at a local level. Graham continued to lead the organisation through expansion of remit as the Better Regulation Delivery Office in 2012, Regulatory Delivery in 2016 before the creation of the Office for Product Safety and Standards in 2018.
Eva Sinkovic
Deputy Head of Unit, Product Safety and Rapid Alert System, Directorate-General for Justice and Consumers, European Commission
Eva is the Deputy Head of Product Safety and Rapid Alert System unit in the Directorate-General for Justice and Consumers of the European Commission.
The unit is, inter alia, in charge of the EU General Product Safety Regulation and the management of the Safety Gate, the EU Rapid Alert for Dangerous non-food products. In her capacity, Eva oversees the international activities of the Unit which include bilateral and multilateral cooperation. Eva serves as bureau member and vice-chair of the OECD Working Party on Consumer Product Safety and is actively involved in the UNCTAD informal group on consumer product safety.
She is also directly in charge for overseeing the joint EU Member States' enforcement projects, flagship projects such as the EU Product Safety Award, International Product Safety Week, communication and standardisation under the General Product Safety Regulation. Eva has a 10+ years of expertise in the field of consumer product safety. Before joining the Commission in 2014, she was project-based consultant for public sector and not for profit organisations in Italy and abroad. She holds a master's degree in Economics, specialising in political economics and a PhD in social and cognitive sciences.
Samuel Terry
Research and Outreach Manager, Electrical Safety First
Samuel leads the charity’s research and outreach initiatives.
Developing creative new partnerships and exploring innovative ways of generating data to support ESF’s campaign activities. Samuel's varied career started in 2018 in a local government housing policy role, where he worked on the development of strategic housing delivery documents and a variety of research initiatives to inform policy development, before eventually moving to the civil service for a stint with Homes England, helping to deliver the Housing Infrastructure Fund. He then moved into the energy sector, working for the biomass power generator Drax, which served as an introduction to the field and led to his present role with Electrical Safety First.
