Our U.S. Open Banking Build it Calculator is a first of it's kind. Built for U.S. banks and credit unions to accurately estimate the cost, effort, and complexity of building and maintaining open banking APIs. It's a pretty amazing tool, but don't just take our word for it... “Enabling safe consumer-permissioned data access through interoperable, FDX-aligned APIs can bring big benefits and ROI to financial institutions” says Kevin Feltes, CEO of the Financial Data Exchange. “There’s great value in tools like this that can help financial institutions to better understand what’s involved in that endeavor, not only in the build phase but also in maintaining these channels for years to come.” Book a demo of the tool: https://lnkd.in/dDWne8X8 Eyal Sivan

  • We do one thing better than anyone else — compliant open banking APIs. But, we’d argue there’s something else we excel at too: team spirit. In July, as part of an initiative led by our Wellbeing Team, a group at Ozone API took on the Minutes of Movement Challenge. The goal? To see how many minutes of exercise we could collectively rack up throughout the month — whether it was walking, running, yoga, or anything in between. • A bold move from JP Morgan has sparked a real debate: Will open banking work best when it creates value for everyone, especially the banks providing the APIs? A great post from our CEO and Co-Founder, Huw Davies, unpacking the implications, the tensions, and the bigger opportunity. Where do you stand on monetising open banking APIs?

JP Morgan dropped some big news on Friday about their intent to charge third parties to access the APIs which allow customers to share their banking data and rightly it has resulted in a LOT of opinion. It has hit the share price of some of the big data access providers and it has also resulted in many loud objections based on the premise of customer data rights. Personally, I think this is exposing an important debate. For open banking and open finance to really unlock the true potential, providing great APIs needs to be a value and revenue generating activity for the banks. There, I’ve said it. The biggest handbrake on some of the early market implementations (like the UK and Europe) is that it was positioned as a penalty to the banks and there was no obvious route to drive value for them and therefore no incentive to do it well. Things moved slowly and the huge potential beyond mere compliance is still almost entirely untapped. I have a clear point of view therefore that banks should have a strategy to drive value from exposing great open APIs. At Ozone API, that is the driving force that sits behind our platform. To help banks and FIs meet their open banking and open finance obligations easily AND have the tools to go way beyond. However, I don’t think the right answer is to try and monetise everything. Basic account information such as balances and transactions is a utility and in many of the regulations, a right. Even where charging is allowed I don’t see it being the most meaningful long term revenue stream. I think the value creation strategy for banks should come from two clear drivers: 1) There will be some API sets that really add value or unlock capabilities for third parties and that they will happily pay for (Premium APIs) 2) There will be some API sets that are really about embedding a banks financial products and services in a third party channel. The value does not come from charging for the API, but benefitting from creating a new channel to win new customers and provide more products. The first should create some interesting new revenue streams as banks and FIs learn how to monetise APIs that enable great payment experiences, faster journeys through the provision of trusted identity validation or new innovation enabled by the provision of enriched data. The second should create a new distribution channel that offers far more reach and flexibility than a traditional branch or bank mobile app. Embedding financial experiences, where the customer needs them and at exactly the right moment and all done in a way that builds on the same standardised approach to security and consent is the real prize. We are seeing a number of banks and FIs start to explore the opportunity. But nowhere near enough yet. I value the debate that this move from JP Morgan is creating, although I suspect the real goal here is a level set of expectations rather that significant long term revenue form basic data access.
