A Man on Fire: The Worlds of Thomas Wentworth Higginson [Book]

Thomas Wentworth Higginson was the kind of person who, despite every attempt by his family to make him into a respectable minister, rejected both privilege and convention. He brought a weapon when he moved to Bleeding Kansas. He led one of the first Black regiments, the 1st Carolina Volunteers, into battle and even met Harriet Tubman. After the war, he was one of Atlantic Monthly’s founding editors and corresponded with Emily Dickinson. Douglas Egerton’s biography embraces all the facets of this American whirlwind, a man who played some part in nearly every major reform movement of his time.
