After many discussions with top employers in the City of Pasadena, they expressed that the main struggle they face is finding quality applicants to help their businesses thrive. Furthermore, high on their list of priorities was finding ways to cultivate culture and get people from all walks of life and generations to work in harmony to achieve maximum potential.

The Pasadena Loves Local Program (PLL), a partnership between the Pasadena Economic Development Corporation (PEDC), Pasadena Chamber of Commerce and the City of Pasadena, took this information and asked the questions:

What happens when Baby Boomers, Generation Xers, Millennials, and Generation Zers work in the same space?

The answer: Too often, it's miscommunication, and why is that?

To help answer the subsequent question, PLL created the Generations Collide Breakfast Workshop 2023. This workshop is an opportunity to shed light on generational differences and provide a platform for all workforce generations to come together and have a conversation about harnessing generational power and translating it into workplace success.

Due to the information given and value received, the Generations Collide Breakfast Workshop has now become a much-anticipated annual event.

Highlights from Generations Collide 2023

“Every generation is needed in the workplace,” said Olivia Rivers of Bridge Over Troubled Waters as she moderated the first annual Generations Collide 2023.

Generational Misconceptions:

  • Generation Z - “Not good with face-to-face interactions,” Anthony Herrera, Clark Freight Lines
  • Millennial - “Technology is the Millennials' breadbasket,” Josh Pressly, Savannah Cafe & Bakery
  • Generation X - “Not adaptable when we have been adapting from VHS to Netflix and chill, from pagers to the computer on your hip,” Everett Smith, Kaneka North America
  • Baby Boomer - “Labeled selfish, greedy, workaholics, stubborn, and their way reigns supreme,” Melinda Torrison, Meador Staffing

What each generation brings to the workplace:

  • Baby Boomer - “Resilience, history, wisdom, leadership, and mentoring,” Melinda Torrison, Meador Staffing
  • Generation X - “Adaptability and steadiness,” Everett Smith, Kaneka North America
  • Millennial - “Balance between work and family, work disconnection value,” Josh Pressly, Savannah Cafe & Bakery
  • Generation Z - “Passion for positive change,” Anthony Herrera, Clark Freight Lines

Generations Collide 2023 explored many more reasons why Rivers’ statement rang true and the relationship value between the generations that is often overlooked or ignored. It’s time to do the same and more as Pasadena Loves Local prepares for Generations Collide 2024!
