Tom Shurer

In Dec. 2025, Devereux Vice President of Information Resources Tom Shurer, M.A., M.S., will retire after nearly 42 years of exceptional leadership and service to the organization.

From his beginnings as a speech language pathologist to his current role as vice president of information resources, Tom Shurer, M.A., M.S., has dedicated his entire career to advancing Devereux’s mission, ensuring the highest quality of care and innovation.

In Dec. 2025, Shurer will retire after nearly 42 years of exceptional leadership and service to the organization.

Shurer joined Devereux in 1984, working as a speech language pathologist at Devereux Pennsylvania’s Leo Kanner Center and Health Services Unit. During his tenure at Devereux, he has held various positions of increasing responsibility, including: residential program supervisor; director of quality improvement/regulatory affairs; information analyst; assistant director of clinical technologies; director of clinical technologies; and national director of information resources. He has served in his current role since 2013.

“Tom’s leadership, expertise and commitment have left an indelible mark our organization and the individuals and families we are privileged to serve,” said Devereux Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer Rhea Fernandes, Psy.D. “As vice president of information resources, Tom has been responsible for leading the maintenance and evolution of Devereux’s IT infrastructure and applications, and implementing strategies to enable innovation for the benefit of those in our care. It is rare that a leader, at any organization, has the breadth and depth of experience, coupled with a strong operational perspective, that Tom brings to his role, which has made him an invaluable member of our leadership team.”

Achieving transformational change

During his tenure, Shurer and his team have achieved significant and transformational change, such as: shifting the focus of IT support/services toward a more customer-centric model; forging excellent vendor relationships; establishing a focus on cybersecurity; introducing business analytics as a vital function at Devereux; transitioning an on-site data center to a hosted center/live disaster recovery model; advancing and growing the nonprofit’s technology infrastructure; building strong internal controls; and establishing collaborative partnerships with all Devereux centers, as well as its Clinical and Operations teams.

In recent years, Shurer also was an important member of Devereux’s Servant Leadership and National Culture and Engagement Committees.

Ever the servant leader, Shurer remains humble in his many accomplishments, sharing: “I have had the privilege of partnering with my team, and our staff across the organization, to deliver high-quality service and technology solutions. While I was part of this work, I cannot take credit for the time, effort and patience our employees have demonstrated when implementing various technology-related tools and applications. Working with talented and dedicated staff has been a highlight of my career.”

Future plans

After his retirement, Shurer plans to continue to support Devereux with special projects.

Fernandes noted, “We are grateful to Tom for his more than four decades of support, wisdom and commitment to excellence, while always walking us to the aisle. We wish him all the best as he prepares for his well-deserved retirement in December.”
