WASHINGTON — After discovering raw pork chorizo products with possible foreign material contamination, the US Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) issued a public health alert on May 2.

The issue was first discovered when a consumer filed a complaint with APCO Brand Meats, a San Antonio Packing Co. brand, about finding pieces of hard plastic and metal in the raw chorizo. The establishment then notified FSIS of the potential issue.

The following raw chorizo product, which was produced on Feb. 12, is subject to the public health alert:

  •  12-oz vacuum-sealed packages containing "LEAN apco BRAND MEATS ALL NATURAL PREMIUM CHORIZO" with the best-by date of 5/12/24.

The product bears the establishment number "EST. 602" inside the USDA mark of inspection.

APCO Brand Meats distributed the product to H-E-B stores in Texas. A recall was not requested since the product is no longer available for purchase.

FSIS said there have been no confirmed reports of injury or illness due to consumption of the chorizo.
