PET/CT

A positron emission tomography (PET) scan, also known as PET scan, is a highly specialized molecular imaging test that helps determine how your organs and tissues are functioning using a radioactive tracer. It’s often used in conjunction with computer tomography (CT) imaging to detect certain diseases before they would show up on other imaging studies. Unlike traditional imaging tests such as ultrasound, X-ray or CT scans, which look at the body’s anatomy, PET technology looks at the chemical (metabolic) activity of the cells in your body.

The combined benefits of PET/CT scan allow for early detection of conditions such as many cancers, heart disease and brain disorders – and can even help radiologists to differentiate between those lesions that are cancerous (malignant) or non-cancerous (benign).

WakeMed/Raleigh Radiology uses the most advanced PET/CT technology available – the Siemens Healthineers Biograph Vision. Featuring the use of artificial intelligence, the Siemens Healthineers Biograph Vision is the next-generation of PET/CT scanners that uses advanced imaging to detect even the smallest lesions with less exposure to radiation.

Benefits of PET/CT

The combination of the two modalities in a PET/CT scanner provides a wide range of benefits, including:

  • Reduces the need for invasive procedures or surgeries such as painful biopsies or other procedures.
  • Offers early diagnosis since PET/CT can show pathological changes earlier than they would show up on CT or MRI alone.
  • Identifies accurate disease staging and location for enhanced biopsy, surgery or treatment planning.
  • Can assess patient’s response to and effectiveness of treatment, which can help specialists/oncologists make informed therapy decisions.

Our Commitment to You

  • We are committed to reducing radiation exposure by using the lowest dose possible at all times. Our state-of-the-art Siemens Healthineers Biograph Vision scanner makes this possible by requiring significantly less injected tracer doses than other current technologies.
  • Our team is comprised of board-certified, molecular imaging and nuclear medicine radiologists with decades of experience. Our PET/CT team is supported by expert technologists who are highly-trained and/or board-certified in PET technology.
  • As always, our goal is to make your experience as comfortable as possible. If you have any questions or concerns about your appointment, please call us at 919-350-4210.
