Advancing EHR-Based Research: Major Progress in the ENACT Network

During 2024’s CTSA meeting in November, 2024, attendees had the opportunity to hear an update on the ENACT Network, a groundbreaking initiative that is reshaping how researchers leverage electronic health records (EHRs) for transformative research. The ENACT presentation highlighted key milestones and outlined exciting developments that will expand opportunities for investigators across the CTSA Consortium.

ENACT: Pioneering EHR-Based Research

The ENACT Network is now fully operational, offering a robust platform to enable investigators to conduct EHR-based studies on any topic. By linking millions of patient EHRs across dozens of CTSA hubs, ENACT facilitates research queries through patient counts, providing a valuable foundation for large-scale, data-driven studies.

In a unique advancement, ENACT has launched secure, study-specific, time-limited Enclaves. These Enclaves empower investigators to conduct sophisticated analyses, such as employing AI and machine learning methodologies, while maintaining the highest standards of data security and compliance.

Looking to the future, ENACT will soon unveil its Clinical Evidence Service, designed to provide real-world insights for clinicians, further bridging the gap between research and practice.

Next Steps for the ENACT Network

To sustain momentum and broaden participation, ENACT will roll out additional resources and guidance in the coming month:

  • Federated Patient Count Research Program: Details on how sites can join or continue participating in this collaborative initiative.
  • Access to the ENACT Enclave Analytics Platform: Agreements and tools that will enable investigators to harness cutting-edge analytics technologies.
  • ENACT Connection Guide: A customizable resource for local dissemination, explaining ENACT’s capabilities and benefits to investigators. This guide will be supported by an evolving series of informational videos to simplify promotion and onboarding. Why Join ENACT?

Participation in the ENACT Network offers investigators unparalleled access to real-world data from across the CTSA Consortium. This platform not only accelerates research but also positions investigators at the forefront of innovation in data-driven discovery. By engaging with ENACT, research teams gain the tools and resources needed to address pressing questions in healthcare, develop novel methodologies, and drive forward the boundaries of science.

As the ENACT Network continues to grow and evolve, its vision of transforming EHR data into actionable insights remains steadfast. For more information and to access the presentation slides, CTSA colleagues are encouraged to connect with the ENACT team. Together, we are building a future where data and collaboration drive breakthroughs in health and science.
