Crestron Home OS Feature Spotlight

Since its inception, the Crestron Home® OS has seen dozens of updates, all designed to make the platform more powerful, more intuitive, and more robust with each iteration. But as features are added, some key elements of the system may tend to be overlooked in favor of a focus on the “latest and greatest.”

It’s part of our mission to keep our dealers, clients, and users of the Crestron Home platform abreast of everything it’s capable of. To that end, we’ll now turn our attention to some of the "hidden gems" of the platform, even as the next update progresses. After all, the value of a platform is not just about future capabilities, it's also about what it can already do.

Voice Integrations, including Alexa, Siri, and Xfinity

“The voice integrations function in the Crestron Home OS in the same manner as everyone’s accustomed to,” says Jason Oster, Crestron’s director of product management solutions. “This morning, when I got out of bed, I said, ‘Alexa, turn on the kitchen light,’ so that it’s on by the time I get down to the kitchen — no need to touch a panel or a button while my eyes are still blurry.”

Apple TV® media extender, and Xfinity voice control are both available via the TSR-310 Handheld Remote. “I just press the mic button and say, ‘Find movies that feature, say, a specific movie star,’” says Oster.

“As for Siri, Crestron Home also supports integration with Siri shortcuts, which you can command via voice,” says Oster. “A dealer can create many common Quick Actions, with scenes such as ‘Morning Wake Up’ or ‘Go to Bed’ and simply export those to make them available via Siri.”

And speaking of shortcuts …

Customization of Apple Shortcuts

“These shortcuts are specific to functions inside the home, and you create them as needed and name them anything you like,” says Oster. “Those Quick Actions can appear on your iPhone home screen like any other app you’d find there,” adds Georgio Galaris, manager of residential marketing at Crestron. Oster’s especially fond of the possibilities that these shortcuts bring. “Even outside the Crestron ecosystem, you can deploy NFC tags,” says Oster. “When I touch my phone to the NFC tag in my car, it knows I'm in the car so that it can turn off the garage lights, for example. It’s very easy to leverage all of those cool Apple features — and then let the homeowner modify functionality with Apple shortcuts themselves even when the dealer’s not around.”

Bluetooth Connectivity

“Our daughter went to a concert the other night, and she wanted to share a video from her phone,” says Oster. “Instead of sharing the audio via the little speaker in her smartphone, she was able to route the sound into the kitchen where we were talking for a more immersive experience.” The full spectrum of sound — including bass from the system’s subwoofer — was delivered through Crestron DM NAX® Audio-over-IP technology via an Audio Edge Device, one that we’ve described in a previous post on the Crestron blog:

The DM-NAX-BTIO-1G is a wall plate with Bluetooth® communications and analog inputs and outputs that allows you to easily add Bluetooth audio to any DM NAX® Audio-over-IP, DM NVX® AV-over-IP, Dante® audio network, or AES67 AoIP system. The DM-NAX-BTIO-1G’s flexible form factor can be either put in a wall plate or surface mounted and hidden away — just a single network connection allows you to control and manage the device through the Crestron Home® OS.

“It was a snap for her to send the audio to the right zone,” says Oster. “And behind the scenes, the Crestron Home OS system does all the magic to route that audio to our kitchen.” That’s true for any Bluetooth connected device, adds Galaris: “It’s a fantastic way to really round out the in-home exercise bike experience, for example.”

Adjoining Room Audio

The Crestron Home OS makes it easy to send music to individual rooms, of course, but the ability to create custom zones is especially useful. “Let’s return to the example of my morning routine, says Oster. “It’s a snap to create a ‘primary suite zone’ that can be called up on the keypads. “I have a main bedroom, bathroom, and closet all in the primary suite. In the morning, I just want everything to work together in all of those rooms.” Any single keypad can play music in just that room, or the entire suite.

The Device Health Dashboard

“The dashboard offers a quick way of seeing the health of all your devices in the system,” says Oster. And if something goes wrong, it’s very simple to trigger a reboot, or power cycle if its connected to a power controller. “It doesn’t happen too often, but suppose your Apple TV locks up. Normally, our dealers are getting a call because the content delivery devices are behind the TV or hidden away in an equipment room. We don't want people crawling around an equipment rack, unplugging something, and plugging it back in.” With the Device Health Dashboard, the user can call up the device and give it a power cycle from their couch.

“And that's just one example,” he adds. “Let’s take your router as an illustration: In Crestron Home, even though you're not controlling that router, you can add what we call an ‘uncontrolled device.’ Name it and attach it to a Crestron-controlled PDU outlet, and it’ll show up in the dashboard — and anyone can reboot that device from there.”

Circadian Lighting Customization

Circadian rhythm settings have been available in the Crestron Home platform for years. As we noted on the blog when the update was released (along with a step-by-step guide):

Circadian rhythm settings give you the ability to “auto-tune” lights to mimic aspects of natural light throughout the course of the day. This update allows everyone who currently utilizes Crestron dimmers to adjust light intensity in this “bio-centric” manner immediately.

The system allows for customization of those cycles, too, as well as the ability to extend those settings to the homeowner’s interfaces. “Throughout the day, that color temperature on the keypad will change along with the lights in my room,” Oster explains. That automated feature serves two purposes: It’s an elegant addition to the aesthetic of any home, and it can cut down on the amount of blue light that a client’s exposed to as bedtime approaches.

The Crestron Home platform can control many third-party devices, including DMF PhaseX™ products.

Quick Actions

The ability to program Quick Actions is one of Oster’s favorite aspects of the Crestron Home OS. “Over time, after you live with your system, you tend to fall into patterns. As night falls, I may turn on the porch lights. I may make sure the garage is closed. I may turn some interior lights a little bit brighter. I can do that easily with the Crestron Home platform with just a few button presses. But when I combine those functions into a Quick Action, I can make it happen just with a single button press. Or even better, if all those things happen at the same time every day, I can simply schedule them to occur automatically.”

Those Quick Actions can be enhanced with the platform’s conditional logic features. Galaris notes, “That action can trigger a check to double-check that the shades are closed, for example.” As we noted on the blog previously, “Conditional sequences introduce the ability to create “if-then, else” statements to the automation process, giving dealers the ability to create complex and nuanced automation scenarios with a defined set of conditions that must be met before an action is triggered.”

Oster advocates living with the system to understand its full potential, and that goes double for dealers. “If you have any downtime, experiment with the system. Once you start experiencing these things and trying them, you can apply these Quick Actions to your next customer's job.

“When you’re solving real-world problems for yourself, it makes it vastly easier to take that knowledge to your next project.”

Residential Lighting

Your body runs on a 24-hour cycle called a circadian rhythm. Lighting affects one major aspect of it: your sleep-wake cycle. Replicating natural light provided by the cycles of the sun with artificial light can improve your mood, concentration, creativity, and energy levels, as well as promote better sleep. This can be accomplished using tunable LED light fixtures and technology such as the Crestron SolarSync® photosensor.
