Mental health awareness has grown in recent years, yet many aspects remain overlooked. Depression, a widespread condition, often goes undetected in men due to societal norms and stereotypes. Men might not express sadness openly, leading to misunderstandings about their struggles. Recognising depression in men can be challenging because symptoms may differ from typical expectations.
Understanding these differences is crucial for timely support and treatment. An expert explores how men’s depression might appear unique. By learning these signs, we can better support men in seeking help.
Hidden Signs of Depression In Men

Societal expectations often push men to hide emotions, leading to less obvious symptoms. Gayathri Arvind, Founder and Managing Director, Abhasa, Coimbatore, explains that men often display depression differently than women. Here are key signs to watch for:
Anger or Aggression
Men with depression may seem angry. “They’ll be more aggressive, pick arguments, or become agitated,” says Gayathri. This anger can hide their pain.
Risky Behaviours
Men might do dangerous things to cope. “They’ll try risky behaviours like reckless driving, gambling, or dangerous stunts,” Gayathri explains. A 2020 study found men with depression are twice as likely to take risks.
Substance Abuse
Some men use alcohol, smoking, or drugs to feel better. “They turn to substances to cope or work too much to avoid emotions,” Gayathri says. This can make things worse over time.
Physical Symptoms
Depression can cause physical pain. “They’ll have headaches, back pain, or stomach issues with no clear cause,” Gayathri notes. These pains are often linked to emotional stress.

Social Withdrawal
Men with depression may pull away from others. “They avoid friends and family,” Gayathri explains. This can make them feel lonelier.
Loss of Interest
They may stop enjoying things they once loved. “They’ll feel everything is pointless,” says Gayathri. This lack of interest can make life feel empty.
Trouble Focusing
Depression can make it hard to concentrate. “They’ll struggle to focus and finish tasks,” Gayathri points out. This can affect work and daily life.
Emotional Numbness
Men may feel disconnected. “They’ll feel emotionally numb and unable to care about anything,” Gayathri explains. This numbness is a way to protect themselves from pain.
Not Everyone Shows All Signs
Gayathri says, “Not everyone will have all these signs. Most will only show a few.” But even a few signs can mean they need help. If you see these signs in yourself or someone else, don’t wait. “Consult a professional,” Gayathri advises. Getting help early can make a big difference.
Many men feel they can’t talk about their feelings. Gayathri says, “We need to make it normal for men to talk about mental health. They should feel okay asking for help.”

Ways To Support Someone With Depression
If someone you know is showing signs of depression, there are ways to help. First, listen without judgment. Let them know you care. Encourage them to talk about their feelings, but don’t force them. Offer to help them find professional support, like a therapist or counsellor. Small acts of kindness, like checking in regularly or spending time together, can make a big difference. Avoid saying things like “just cheer up” or “it’s all in your head.” Instead, be patient and understanding.
