Mindfulness and Voice: Exploring the Intersection through Peer-Reviewed Literature

Despite strong interest, only a handful of peer-reviewed studies have examined the relationship between mindfulness and voice. Emerging research indicates that mindfulness can help voice users learn to respond to stress more effectively and may help them manage performance anxiety. In this course, we will examine several types of peer-reviewed literature: a) mindfulness studies that indirectly relate to voice work. b) We will review research that examines mindfulness as it relates to voice-adjacent fields (e.g., music performance anxiety and stammering/stuttering). c) We will look at the few published studies that have directly investigated the relationship between mindfulness and voice and d) we will examine directions for future qualitative and quantitative research.

In this age of ‘evidence-based practice’, it is important for the studio teacher /pedagogue /performer to be able to evaluate research claims. A basic understanding of research methods and biases inherent in the research process is necessary to properly evaluate their conclusions, especially if the research findings influence studio practice. This course will explore some of the central principles of the Feldenkrais Method in terms of the science of the mid-20th century when they were developed as well as their validation based on contemporary advances in our understanding of neuroscience.

Prosody: the musical aspects of speech!

Beatrice Szczepek Reed is Professor of Linguistics at King’s College London, where she is the Co-Director of the Centre for Language, Discourse and Communication. In this session, Beatrice will give an introduction to Prosody, which is often described as ‘the musical aspects of speech’. Prosody comprises pitch (speech melody and register), time (speech tempo and rhythm), loudness, and voice quality. We will explore the forms and functions of prosody in natural talk. For example, as conversationalists we take over the floor from earlier speakers by picking up their speech rhythm; and we indicate that a conversation is nearing its end by speaking in a higher pitch. We will examine audio and video recordings of everyday talk, and together discover how speakers’ prosodic choices become meaningful in conversation.

However, voice acoustics still mystifies much of the singing and teaching population, and for those who do have a working understanding of the scientific principles, applying this knowledge in teaching remains difficult. The vocal folds need a high degree of humidity to be able to vibrate at their normal high frequency. Hydration makes the tissue more flexible and more turgid. The moisture of the tissue is one of the first factors that is lost when there is a pathology or when an unusual overload is suffered. Voice professionals often deal with stress, anxiety, fatigue, and changes of temperature and environment like the dryness of the performing spaces, due to factors like air conditioning or heating. All these factors affect the voice and can make the performer activity more difficult!
