With an easy-to-read style and excellent presentation/formatting, this book offers advice on a range of areas that an author must consider before choosing this path. From a psychological assessment of what it takes to become a successful (and happy) self-published author, to a compelling vision of the future of e-books and detailed advice on the best use of social media, this book is rich in knowledge and guidance.
What I enjoyed most about this book was the positive, upbeat tone: this is a well-balanced look at an industry that is in the throes of major changes. The author sees both self-publishing and traditional publishing as equally professional, and this sense of respect imbues the guide with a mature and comforting wisdom that can only encourage authors in the path to publication.
Friedlander wants you to be sure that you want to enter self-publishing before you do, so he asks you questions that are geared toward you recognizing in yourself the ability to handle all the ins and outs of the trade, your goals for writing and publishing, and all the business-specific needs of the process of getting your books published. He wants you to know the basic issues so that you can set clear goals for yourself that will better organize and tailor the details of the self-publishing process to your book so that it can be a more fulfilling rather than a problematic endeavor.
Friedlander's other key points include:
* Finding your niche and marketing directly to them in as many ways as possible,
* Using social media and other marketing channels to network and promote your book,
* Building an author platform even before you begin the self-publishing process, through social media and other methods,
* Learning about interior book and cover design, as well as the other parts of the publishing process, including editorial and marketing, and, most important,
* Understanding that you cannot and should not do it alone; finding professionals in all the major departments of publishing is indispensable to keeping your sanity, retaining joy in the process, getting the book published in a timely manner, keeping an eye on your budget, and enabling you to keep creative control, which is a major reason why so many authors enter self-publishing.
Friedlander's book definitely instructed me in the preliminary points and aspects of self-publishing, and has inspired me to venture into the field in the near future. I certainly recommend the book for anyone who'd like to self-publish because it is full of clear, invaluable information on the subject, and helps readers recognize the pros and cons of the process via its many details. Above all, Friedlander wants his readers to be positive that they can handle the process before they move full-steam ahead into the field; this is why he asks his readers questions and offers so much thoughtful advice, and for this I commend him.
Throughout the book, you'll find nuggets and gems hidden away that will make your path to publication smoother than you thought possible. Joel has as way of showing you how the dream of publishing your book is not only possible, but something that YOU can really do. But his book goes beyond the positive affirmation by preparing you for the reality of publishing.
Not only is this book full of tips and lists to help you understand the self publishing process, but the material is presented in a way to explain why you should or shouldn't do things. It's almost like sitting at the feet of a professor with more than just academic knowledge, but one who has done it over and over while helping countless authors do it as well.
Joel taps into his decades of industry leading experiences and shares that with you in this book. Already, I have found myself reaching for it a number of times. This resource is unique in that you can read through it cover-to-cover, or jump to the sections as you need it and walk away with exactly the advice you need.
There are a lot of great publishing books out there, but in my opinion, A Self-Publisher's Companion belongs on the short-list of resources that you'll need as an author.

There are some useful tips on the pitfalls to avoid but the aim of the book seems to me to be to drive you towards hiring a professional book designer (such as the author) rather than helping you to do it yourself.
