WITSIUS COVENANTING QUOTE: "What was it then? It was a national covenant between God and Israel, whereby Israel promised to God a sincere obedience to all his precepts, especially to the ten words; God, on the other hand, promised to Israel, that such an observance would be acceptable to him, nor want its reward, both in this life, and in that which is to come, both as to soul and body. This reciprocal promise supposed a covenant of grace. For, without the assistance of the covenant of grace, man cannot sincerely promise that observance; and yet that an imperfect observance should be acceptable to God is wholly owing to the covenant of grace. It also supposed the doctrine of the covenant of works, the terror or which being increased by those tremendous signs that attended it, they ought to have been excited to embrace that covenant of God. This agreement therefore is a consequent both of the covenant of grace and of works; but was formally neither the one nor the other. A like agreement and renewal of the covenant between God and the pious is frequent; both national and individual. Of the former see Josh. xxiv. 22 . 2 Chron. xv. 12. 2 Kings xxiii. 3. Neh. x. 29. Of the latter, Psal. cxix. 106. It is certain, that in the passages we have named, mention is made of some covenant between God and his people. If any should ask me, of what kind, whether of works or of grace? I shall answer, it is formally neither: but a covenant of sincere piety, which supposes both."- Herman Witsius, Economy of the Covenants (emphases added), on the Puritan Hard Drive Covenanting In the Bible and In the Future (As Prophesied In Biblical Prophecy), By Pastor Jim Dodson, Pastor Greg Price and Pastor James Willson (Many Free SWRB MP3s, PDFs and Videos)
" Christians have often entered into social covenants. The early fathers make mention of acts of covenanting, and even of subscriptions affixed to such covenants. The Waldenses covenanted. During the Reformation of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, such covenants -- more or less perfect -- were frequently sworn. We may specify the League of Smalcald in 1536, in which the Reformed German Waldensian churches and the German Protestants in 1571, to adhere to the Reformed religion: the oath taken in 1537 by the Senate and people of Geneva to the leading articles of the Christian religion and discipline as then reformed; this engagement being afterwards extended, as a league so as to include Berne and Lausanne: the covenants of the Hungarian, Transylvanian, and Holland reformers: and, lastly, and chiefly, the covenants of our ancestors in the British islands. In fact, it has been truly said that “the history of the church’s reformation in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, is written in her covenants." - James M. 3. In personal Covenanting with God, and the engaging of particular Souls to him, in the way of the Covenant of Grace; Christ's Suretiship is the ground of all proceeding: till this be eyed, and in some measure believed, there is no possibility of advancing one step toward a new Covenant-state: for how can fallen broken man (who understands his condition to be such) think of dealing with God, unless he bring a Cautioner with him; or how shall he bring to God Christ, a surety of the better testament, [Heb. 7.22,] who hath not heard of and believed his eternal act of Suretiship, Rom. 10.14, How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? and how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard? and how shall they hear without a preacher? {28} This Covenant of Suretiship therefore must needs be the foundation of the Covenant of Grace and reconciliation; hence 'tis that David and Hezekiah flee to this act of Suretiship, and lay the weight of their dealing with God on it, Psalm 119.122, Be surety for thy servant for good. Another instance in which posterity is recognized in covenant obligation is found in Joshua 9:15 . This covenant was made between the children of Israel and the Gibeonites. Between four and five hundred years after that time, the children of Israel are visited with a very severe famine, in the days of David. 2 Sam. 21:1. And it is expressly declared by the Lord that, 'It is for Saul, and for his bloody house, because he slew the Gibeonites.' And at the same time, v. 2, that very covenant is recognized, and the breach of it is stated, as being the formal reason of the divine displeasure. Now, had it not been for this covenant, the extirpation of the Gibeonites would not have been imputed to Israel as a thing criminal; for they were comprehended in Canaanitish nations, which God had commanded them to root out. - William L. Roberts, The Reformed Presbyterian Catechism (1853, emphases added), pp. 139-140, on the Puritan Hard Drive

There was one great, and even sublime idea, brought somewhat indefinitely before the Westminster Assembly, which has not yet been realized, the idea of a Protestant union throughout Christendom, not merely for the purpose of counterbalancing Popery, but in order to purify, strengthen, and unite all true Christian churches, so that with combined energy and zeal they might go forth, in glad compliance with the Redeemer's commands, teaching all nations, and preaching the everlasting gospel to every creature under heaven.

For it is acceptable to God, and well pleasing in His sight, when His people come willingly in the day of His power (and how shall they not be willing in the day of His power?) to enter into a religious covenant with Him, and amongst themselves, whatsoever be the condition of the people of God, whether in sorrow and humiliation before deliverance, or in rejoicing and thanksgiving after deliverance. This is it which the Lord waits for at their hands, which they have been used to perform, and with which He hath been so well pleased, that it hath been the fountain of many deliverances and blessings unto them. When a people begin to forget God, He lifteth up His hand against them, and smiteth them: and when His people, humbled before Him, lift up their hands, not only in supplication, http://www.puritandownloads.com/covenanting-in-the-bible-and-in-the-future-as-prophesied-in-biblical-prophecy-by-pastor-jim-dodson-pastor-greg-price-and-pastor-james-willson-many-free-swrb-mp3s-pdfs-and-videos/. It is the best work of faith, to join in covenant with God, the best work of love and Christian communion, to join in covenant with the people of God; the best work of the best zeal, to join in covenant for reformation, against the enemies of God and religion; the best work of true loyalty, to join in covenant for the preservation of our king and superiors; and the best proof of natural affection, (and to be without natural affection is one of the great sins of the Gentiles) to join in covenant for defense of our native country, liberties and laws: such as from these necessary ends do withdraw, and are not willing to enter into covenant, have reason to enter into their own hearts, and to look into their faith, love, zeal, loyalty, and natural affection. As it is acceptable to God, so have we for it the precedent and example not only of the people of God of old, of the Reformed churches of Germany, and the low countries; but of our own noble and Christian progenitors in the time of the danger of religion, which is expressed in the covenant itself. The defect was, they went not on thoroughly to enter into a solemn covenant, an happiness reserved for this time, which had they done, the corruptions and calamities of these days might have been prevented. And if the Lord shall be pleased to move, loose, and enlarge the hearts of His people in his majesty's dominions, not in simulation, nor in luke-warmness, as those that are almost persuaded to be Christians, but as becometh the people of God, it shall be the prevention of many evils and miseries, and a means of many and rich blessings, spiritual and temporal, to ourselves, our little ones, and the posterity that shall come after us, for many generations. - Alexander Henderson, The Solemn League and Covenant Address at Westminster

A powerful sermon that every Protestant needs to hear!
Pope Francis Elected: The Mystery of Iniquity Continues is written by Richard Bennett, former Roman Catholic priest (1956 - 1985). As Pope Francis moves onto the world stage, many people are wondering how he will be generally accepted. The pleasant aura of John Paul II still lingers for many, while the shortcomings of Benedict XVI still color the current scene. More importantly, given the Pope's exalted position in the world, many will be asking how Pope Francis will change the Papacy.
The fact remains, however, that since the early 19th century the Office of the Papacy has been set on a course of action that no individual pope will reverse.
How can this be so? Constantine decreed Christianity the religion of the Roman Empire setting the stage for the Mystery of Iniquity in 330 A.D. Emperor Constantine moved the seat of the Imperial Roman Empire from Rome to Constantinople. By that time, he had decreed Christianity the religion of the Empire in hopes that by means of its acceptance a new unifying strength could be infused into his crumbling empire. The new "state religion" was organized much like the Roman Empire's military...

Conclusion
Cardinal Bergoglio, in order to build a public image for himself, once elected, chose the name Pope Francis in honor of St Francis of Assisi. St Francis was known to be a soft hearted lover of nature; thus, Pope Francis adroitly implied that he would be similarly unassuming, kind, and harmless. On the other hand, from his first speech and subsequent presentations, he has shown himself as a totalitarian Jesuit. Thus, as the media and many ecumenical Evangelicals fawn over Pope Francis, it is necessary to biblically analyze his speeches and performances. The mind-boggling conclusions are documented in this our article on Pope Francis.

"We take this opportunity to focus upon the preeminent issues of the Reformation. The present essay seeks to redirect the focus of readers to the bigger picture, providing a framework for assessing Roman Catholicism, contemporary evangelicalism, and the ECT document. This book illustrates how both Romanists and evangelicals have rejected scriptural teaching about (1.) the essence of the gospel, (2.) divinely-instituted worship, and (3.) the marks of a true church. By corrupting the gospel, worship, and the church, evangelicals and Roman Catholics together are making shipwreck of the Christian faith." - Kevin Reed, Making Shipwreck of the Faith: Evangelicals and Roman Catholics Together
"The Counter Reformation is generally considered to have three aspects: the Jesuits, the Inquisition, and the Council of Trent. In view of the significance of the Protestant apocalyptic interpretation of history which prophetically pinpointed step by step the events covering the whole Christian era from the beginning to the end (i.e. Historicism-ed.), it seems justifiable to suggest a fourth aspect, namely the preteristic (Preterism-ed.) and futuristic (Futurism-ed.) interpretations launched by Catholic expositors as a counterattack."

This is one of the best debates of which we are aware. Every Protestant needs to listen to this debate at least once, as it contains an uncompromising testimony to one of the most unanimous truths championed by Protestant Reformers during the Protestant Reformation. In fact, the truth that the Papacy is the Antichrist (and/or the Historicism of which this truth is an integral component) is found in every major historic Protestant confession, catechism and covenant -- or was the position of the brave Reformation martyrs and ministers who drew up these important documents. This truth is also found in the writings of all the major Protestant Reformers. Furthermore, it is also certain that anyone who denies that the Papacy is the Antichrist, and/or is not a Historicist, is not holding to the original formulations of these great biblically-based Reformation documents -- and they are also most certainly not upholding the original Westminster Confession of Faith. In short, this soul-stirring free MP3 exhibits one of the strongest testimonies against the Papal Antichrist of which we are aware.

The 1615 Irish Articles was authored probably by the Puritan Archbishop James Ussher, who was later appointed a delegate to the Westminster Assembly. In
In his Body of Divinity (4th ed., p. 412), Ussher also wrote: "As Christ is the Head of the Church which is His Body, so Antichrist is the head of the Romish Church which is his body. And this Antichrist is one who, under colour of being for Christ, and under the title of [being] His Vice-gerent: exalteth himself above and against Christ; opposing himself unto Him in all His offices and ordinances both in Church and Commonwealth; bearing authority in the Church of God; ruling over that city with seven hills which did bear rule over Nations and put our Lord to death; a man of sin; a harlot; a mother of spiritual fornications to the kings and people of the Nations; a child of perdition, and a destroyer; establishing himself by lying-miracles and false-wonders. All [of] which marks together, do agree with none but the Pope of Rome."
"I deny that See to be Apostolical, wherein nought is seen but a shocking apostasy -- I deny him to be the Vicar of Christ, who, in furiously persecuting the gospel, demonstrates by his conduct that he is Antichrist."
Everything that Popery touches it converts into sin. It possesses an accursed alchemy by which it transmutes what is good into evil. It has taken all the commandments of the decalogue and converted them into sin. It has taken all the doctrines of the Gospel and converted them into sin; it had taken all the sacraments of the Church and converted them into instruments of sin; it has taken all the offices and officers of the church and made them agents of sin; it has taken all that is subtle in intellect, all that is brilliant in genius, and all that is noble in eloquence, and used them in the service of sin. The policy of Popery is not to deny truth; it ever acts as a Vice-Christ, as a pretended friend; its policy is to pervert truth, to metamorphose it, and make it fight against itself. There is not a doctrine in the Bible which Popery does not in appearance admit; there is not a doctrine in the Bible which Popery does not in reality deny, and the saving effects of which it does not make void. It takes what is wholesome, and by its infernal skill changes it into what is poisonous. The spiritual apparatus which God has set up for His own glory and man's salvation, Popery has laid hold of and works for just the opposite ends even -- God's dishonour and man's ruin. It is a second and greater Jeroboam who has made Israel to sin. Verily, it is the "man of sin."
"There never has been any difficulty in the mind of any enlightened Protestant in identifying the woman (of Revelation 17) 'sitting on seven mountains', and having on her forehead the name written, 'Mystery, Babylon the Great,' with Roman apostasy. No other city in the world has ever been celebrated, as the city of Rome has, for its situation on seven hills ... To call Rome the city 'of seven hills' was by its citizens held to be as descriptive as to call it by its own proper name. Hence Horace speaks of it by reference to its seven hills alone, when he addresses, 'Thy gods who have set their affections on the seven hills'. Martial, in like manner, speaks of '... the seven dominating mountains' ... Now while this characteristic of Rome has ever been well marked and defined, it has always been easy to show, that the church which has its seat and headquarters on the seven hills of Rome might most appropriately be called 'Babylon,' inasmuch as it is the chief seat of idolatry under the New Testament, as the ancient Babylon was the chief seat of idolatry under the Old."
- Alexander Hislop, The Two Babylons, pp. 1-2, emphases added (on the Puritan Hard Drive)
"It is the bounden duty of every Christian to pray against Antichrist, and as to what Antichrist is no sane man ought to raise a question. If it be not the popery in the Church of Rome there is nothing in the world that can be called by that name. If there were to be issued a hue and cry for Antichrist, we should certainly take up this church on suspicion, and it would certainly not be let loose again, for it so exactly answers the description."
- Charles Spurgeon
"There is no other head of the Church but the Lord Jesus Christ. Nor can the Pope of Rome, in any sense, be head thereof; but is that Antichrist, that man of sin, and son of perdition, that exalts himself, in the Church, against Christ and all that is called God."

It is simple to set up and there is a tremendous amount of material available that will last me for years as I go through it all.
The search tools are, by themselves, well worth the price of the Puritan Hard Drive. It makes finding authors, topics and documents incredibly easy and fast. (The speed itself is amazing!) I also find the ability to copy from any of the (searchable - ed.) PDFs and paste into whatever .doc I happen to have open to be extremely useful.
I'm also glad to see that there are audio sermons/teachings (MP3s - ed.), as well as WMVs (videos - ed) from a variety of speakers and preachers as this provides a well-rounded approach to my own theology.
I've downloaded the entire drive to one of my computers that can handle it, and have it hooked up to a laptop.
The Puritan Hard Drive is a tremendous asset to my library and a huge time-saver for my own learning, preaching, teaching and counseling.
Thank you ever so much for doing this.
- Kevin Guillory (Protestant Pastor who was formerly a Roman Catholic priest), Redeemer Christian Congregation (Baltimore, MD)
Christmas was not celebrated by the apostolic church. It was not celebrated during the first few centuries of the church. As late as A.D. 245, Origen (Hom. 8 on Leviticus) repudiated the idea of keeping the birthday of Christ, "as if he were a king Pharaoh." By the middle of the 4th century, many churches in the Latin west were celebrating Christmas. During the 5th century, Christmas became an official Roman Catholic holy day. In A.D. 534, Christmas was recognized as an official holy day by the Roman state. The reason that Christmas became a church holy day has nothing to do with the Bible. The Bible does not give the date of Christ's birth. Nowhere in the Bible are we commanded to celebrate Christmas. Christmas (as well as many other pagan practices) was adopted by the Roman church as a missionary strategy. - The Regulative Principle of Worship and Christmas by Brian Schwertley (FREE BOOK)

Nor can the Pope of Rome, in any sense, be head thereof; but is that Antichrist, that man of sin, and son of perdition, that exalts himself, in the Church, against Christ and all that is called God." - Westminster Confession of Faith 25:6, "Of the Church", Original Edition (click here for a free PDF containing the original text of the WCF or click here to purchase the hardback version or click here for the free MP3 audio version), emphases added. N.B.
