Ertel qualifies for U.S. Amateur

Sam Houston sophomore transfer, Andrew Ertel continues his solid play this summer and qualifies for the U.S. Amateur Championship, the nation's biggest amateur event.

Ertel shot rounds of 67-71 at the Woodlands CC- Palmer Course to finish six-under and claim one of the four spots.

The 2014 U.S. Amateur will be played Aug. 11-17 on the Highlands Course at Atlanta Athletic Club in Johns Creek, Ga. The event will be televised by NBC and the winner will receive exemptions into 2015 Masters, 2015 U.S. Open, and 2015 British Open.

Ertel's freshman season (2012-13) with the Cougars he posted three top 15 finishes including a ninth place performance in Sam Houston's 2012 Harold Funston Invitational at Raven Nest. He also placed high in the Rice Intercollegiate and the HBU Husky Invitational.

Ertel was a four-year letterman for head coach Steve Cribari at the Woodlands where he received the Highlighted Highlander Award. He was the runner-up at the AJGA Signsational Signs Junior at The Woodlands and earned numerous AJGA top-15 individual finishes. Ertel was a 2012 USGA US Junior Amateur Championship qualifier.

His senior season he led the Highlanders to the district championship and was a state medalist qualifier after finishing second individually at the regional tournament.
