UPDATE: Surrey RCMP have determined that charges will not be recommended against the driver. Since the driver involved was not a police officer, the investigation was not undertaken by the Independent Investigations Office and Surrey RCMP Major Crime Unit moved forward with the investigation. After a comprehensive and thorough eight-month investigation, Surrey RCMP tentatively found that no criminality existed on the part of the driver involved this collision.

An expert civilian consultant with the Surrey RCMP is being questioned about their involvement in the hit-and-run death of a man that happened early this morning in Langley.
The 37-year-old Langley man was walking along the 19500 block of the Langley bypass near Fraser Highway, when he was struck by the driver, who was driving a semi truck in the curb lane. After hitting the man, the driver, who RCMP says is in his late 60s early 70s, did not stop to help and fled.
The victim, who has not been identified, was pronounced dead at the scene.
RCMP seized the truck earlier today and was questioning the driver when they discovered the driver is a 20-year expert civilian witness and consultant, who is contracted by law enforcement and other public safety agencies throughout the region. Police say prior to the accident, the driver was working with the Surrey RCMP Traffic section on an ongoing traffic investigation involving Const. Adrian Oliver, who was killed on Nov. 13, 2012 when his unmarked cruiser collided with a truck at a Surrey intersection.
Surrey RCMP Sgt. Drew Grainger says the driver/contractor was driving the truck involved in the collision that killed Const. Oliver, when he struck the pedestrian.
Due to the relationship between police and the driver, the Surrey RCMP immediately requested an independent observer from another police force to oversee the investigation.
Surrey RCMP are still trying to piece together the timeline of events and request anyone who may have witnessed the incident to come forward.
Currently the driver has not been charged.
