Albuquerque Public Schools holds job fair
Albuquerque Public Schools is desperate for staff and is looking for nearly 500 people in the next three weeks.A shortage of staff has been an ongoing issue for the district. Karen Rudys, APS, said people just don't want to go into the education profession anymore.The teachers union, though, disagrees. They say no one wants to be in education because it is a low-paying industry in New Mexico, there are controversial contract negotiations happening and there is too much stress especially revolving around testing and evaluations.APS confirms there are about 460 vacant positions right now, including spots for middle and high school teachers, nurses, custodians and counselors.On Wednesday, they'll be making an extra effort to recruit people for the jobs. They'll hold a massive job fair."We're hoping to have 30 to 40 principals on hand and other staff, too, so we can at least get your name, your resume and meet you," Rudys said.She explained that it is up to the individual principals as to who they hire and for what position.Rudys said they're expecting a lot of people at the job fair and some long lines. Those who are interested in applying to APS should apply online first and then show up to the fair with a resume. Be prepared for an on-the-spot interview as well.The job fair is 2-5 p.m. at APS headquarters at 6400 Uptown Northeast. The building is located west of Louisiana.If the positions are not filled by the time school begins, Rudys said substitutes will fill in. She said those substitutes could become full-time employees if they apply.New Mexico law says student to teacher ratio must be under a certain number, so class sizes will not be any bigger than last year to make up for the staff shortage.
