NANTICOKE, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU-TV) Luzerne County Community College announced a new academic program Monday morning at the main campus in Nanticoke.

The college is establishing a new Human Services Diploma Specializing in addiction recovery. It was created in conjunction with the Pennsylvania Recovery Organizations Alliance.

This is the first credit program in Pennsylvania that will prepare students for work in the drug and alcohol field specializing in peer support recovery.

The program provides students with the opportunity to develop knowledge and skills needed to sit for the PA Certification Board examination to become professionally credentialed.

Jennifer Smith, Secretary, PA Department of Drug and Alcohol Programs was at Monday’s announcement.  She told Eyewitness News “It could apply to anyone, anyone who is in recovery, living in recovery, this could apply to, it doesn’t whether you already have a college degree in something else, maybe you never had any college at all, but that’s the beauty of the program, and that it’s really for anybody”

Only one in ten people with a substance abuse disorder seek help.
