In the Flesh actor Luke Newberry has been cast in E4’s new drama series Banana.

Currently filming in Manchester, Banana is one of three new interlinked shows from Russell T Davies (Queer As Folk, Doctor Who) – with Channel 4′s Cucumber and online show Tofu – exploring 21st century gay life.

Newberry will play Josh, a young law student who finds the past hard to escape, when he has to go home and face his old friend from school.

Dino Fetscher has also joined the cast of Banana, in his first TV role, as Aiden – a handsome, confident young man, who unexpectedly finds himself stuck with the lovelorn Frank for the day. But Frank will challenge everything Aiden thinks about gay life, right to the core.

The characters of Aiden and Josh will both first appear in Cucumber, with their in-depth stories detailed in individual episodes of Banana.

Previously announced Banana cast members include Freddie Fox (Parade’s End), Fisayo Akinade (Fresh Meat), Hannah John-Kamen (Happy Valley), Letitia Wright (Top Boy), Georgia Henshaw (Waterloo Road), Andrew Hayden-Smith (Doctor Who) and comedian Bethany Black.

Davies has written three episodes of Banana, with the other episodes penned by Great British Bake Off presenter Sue Perkins, Matthew Barry and new writers Charlie Covell and Lee Warburton.
