Search called off for Comox Valley hiker, missing since July 8

VANCOUVER – The search has now been called off for 69-year-old Sylvia Apps, who not been seen since she started her hike on July 8.

The Comox Valley woman is an experienced hiker and left at 11 a.m. from the Paradise Meadows area of Mount Washington. She was equipped with navigation and safety equipment and has made large treks previously.

She was to return on July 13 to her starting point but did not show up.

Search and Rescue crews from Comox Valley, North Shore Rescue and many other organizations stepped in to help look for Apps. In total, there were 119 searchers and 54 volunteers involved.

Last Monday, Sylvia’s backpack was found following a tip from other hikers in the area. Crews also found one more hiking pole but nothing else.

Officials now believe Apps may have been in some kind of medical distress.

If anyone was in the area and may have come across or spoken to Sylvia Apps they are asked to contact the Comox valley RCMP at 250-338-1321.
