Juveniles jailed over Bondi bashing

TWO youths who were part of a group that physically attacked five Jews in Bondi last year have received 10-month jail sentences.

Following a Sydney magistrate’s decision to clear one of the men accused of the bashing, The AJN has learned that two 17-year-old boys pleaded guilty to affray and were sentenced to 10 months in juvenile detention on June 30.

The charge stemmed from the attack on October 26 last year, when up to 10 males set upon and racially abused three members of the Behar family and two friends, including a JNF NSW shaliach, as they walked home from a Shabbat dinner.

The assault left the Jewish group with several serious injuries, with one of the victims, Eli Behar, 66, rendered unconscious with internal bleeding in his head.

Other victims suffered broken noses, a broken finger and stitches to their head, as well as scratches and bruises.

The youths, who cannot be named for legal reasons, have been behind bars since the attack and will remain in juvenile detention until August 26.

Following their release, they will remain under control order supervision for a further eight months, which could see them return to the detention centre if they commit a similar offence.

NSW Jewish Board of Deputies president Yair Miller said the assault on the Jewish families was a “traumatic event for them and the community”.

“We obviously want to see justice done and we commend the police for apprehending and prosecuting some of those responsible,” Miller told The AJN.

“Our hope is that it will serve as a deterrent to others and this type of incident will not occur again.”
