Tips for Safely Maintaining a Lawn and Garden

After a long winter of lifeless grass and barren trees, springtime is a welcome opportunity to enjoy the warming weather while cleaning up outdoor spaces. Tidying our yards by gardening, mowing, hedge clipping and weed eating is a great way to get moving and create an outdoor space we can enjoy all summer long. But while the work pays off, there are injuries and illnesses that can get in the way of our progress. Below see 10 tips on things you can do to help keep yourself safe when doing yard cleanup!

  1. Before mowing pick up hard debris so the lawnmower doesn’t run over and kick out sharp or heavy objects causing bruises or lacerations.
  2. Make sure there are no people or animals in the area during mowing so they aren’t at risk of debris related injuries.
  3. While mowing, wear sunglasses, ear protection, long pants and closed toe shoes to protect your eyes, ears, legs and feet.
  4. Wear gloves to prevent blisters and skin rashes.
  5. If something seems wrong, immediately turn off the mower before investigating.
  6. To avoid muscle strain, make sure hedge trimmers and weed eaters are in good working order.
  7. Be on the lookout for and take steps to combat common bugs and plants that can pose problems, like fire ants, ground hornets, and poison ivy.
  8. Keep antihistamines (like Benadryl) on standby in case an allergic reaction occurs.
  9. Wear sunscreen!
  10. Stay hydrated!
