  • The Gospel: From the Beginning... on Nov. 08, 2012

A delightful read! Kenn Allan refers to his work as "Poetry for Non-Poetry Lovers." I fit that description, and can attest. I read 'The Gospel from the Beginning' for its subject, not for lyric or rhyme. But I admit, I found his artistry engaging. Stories that are very familiar to us--the Exodus, the birth narrative of Jesus, the Last Supper, for instance--all came to life with the poet's charm. I believe this would be a wonderful book for a parent or grandparent to share with a child. As a pastor for twenty years, I've taught on all the stories Allan covers in 'The Gospel from the Beginning' many times over. As I read this book, I found his handling of those stories thought provoking and fun. Download it. You'll enjoy--poetry lover or not.
  • Taste And See: An invitation to read the Bible on Nov. 19, 2012

This book's subtitle is An Invitation to Read the Bible. Fitting. Annabel Robinson's Taste and See, published by Scripture Union Canada and the Canadian Bible Society, offers a gentle segue into the Best Selling Book of all time. She shares twelve stories from the Biblical narrative, providing with each an approach, facts and observations from within the text, and then a simple application. The book ends with warm invitations to embrace Christ, and to continue reading the Bible. This isn't a book for more seasoned Bible readers. Taste and See would suit readers who either desire to pick up a Bible for the very first time or readers who, for one reason or another, would like a fresh start--encouragement to grab their Bible off the shelf, dust it off, and mine it anew to discover God. With that audience in mind, this is a worthwhile download. That said, as is sometimes the case with eBooks, numerous formatting glitches lessened my experience with Taste and See. There were frequent spacing errors, blank pages, and unintended paragraph or text breaks viewing it on my devices. I would love to see the author and publisher re-format this work. Fellow Smashwords authors: Pay meticulous attention to the formatting and style guide before you hit publish. They're not kidding when they say it can make the difference between a great read and a toss-it-aside.
  • That Awful Silence on Nov. 26, 2012

In thirty years of following Christ and twenty years in pastoral ministry, I've not seen as honest and insightful a look into what the author refers to as 'the awful silence,' those times when we've prayed and are left longing to hear something--anything--from God. Stan Baldwin revisits familiar Biblical passages--episodes from the lives of Job, David, the Apostle Paul and others--to bring encouragement. He presents a bigger picture perspective. He frames our individual experiences within the larger context--the story we find ourselves in. As a pastor I often sit with individuals and families in the thick of this longing. I'm pleased to have this book as a resource for me, and as something I can offer to them. If you find yourself asking 'Where is God?' then I'd recommend it to you. Baldwin reminds us--our God promises: The day is coming when the fog will lift and God will be clearly heard.
