A city man who accidentally shot his 2-year-old son last New Year's Eve was gunned down early Friday in Camden.

Sergio Rivera, 38, was shot multiple times around 3 a.m. on the 1100 block of N. 21st Street in the city's Cramer Hill neighborhood, the Camden County Prosecutor's Office said.

Authorities did not give a motive for the killing or say if any arrests had been made.

Rivera is Camden's 19th homicide victim this year and the first in more than a month. The city had 25 killings at this time last year on the way to 58.

According to a source close to the investigation, Rivera was the same man arrested for accidentally shooting his young son in the leg and arm with a handgun Dec. 31.

The shooting happened in a car near the 2100 block of Pierce Street in Cramer Hill. The boy's mother and grandmother also were reported to be inside the vehicle

Police said Rivera drove his wounded son to Cooper University Hospital, but he was uncooperative with detectives.

A 9 mm Smith & Wesson handgun was discovered in Rivera's car, and he also was in possession of illegal prescription drugs, authorities said.

Rivera was charged with aggravated assault and endangering the welfare of a child and as well as weapons and drug offenses.

Anyone with information on Rivera's killing is urged to contact Camden County Prosecutor's Office Detective Michael Rhoads at (856) 225-8561 or Camden County Police Detective Mike Ross at (856) 757-7420.
