Patricia D. Warrick

Patricia DeEtte Warrick died peacefully on February 23, 2023.  She was born February 06, 1925, on the Scott family farm outside of LaGrange, Indiana.  Pat grew up in LaGrange and had fond childhood memories of spending time with her paternal grandparents at this farm.  Her early years were marked with many accomplishments.  She was valedictorian of her high school, cheerleader, a talented orchestra cellist, classical pianist and played the trumpet so she could be in the marching band.  Pat also played her trumpet in an all-girls big band while her brothers were off to war in the early 1940’s, but Cello was her favorite. 

She studied Science at Indiana University, where she earned her Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry.  While raising her family, she was awarded a Bachelor of Arts in English at Goshen College and later attended Purdue University, where she got her Master’s degree in English. Later the University of Wisconsin presented her with her Doctoral in English.  

Her love of books led her into a lifelong career of reading, writing, and teaching English.  Pat started writing short stories for her children, then later to fulfill her bachelor’s requirements. She became an accomplished author.  Her initial publications were articles in scholarly publications, but she found her forte in Science Fiction.  She authored or coauthored dozens of anthologies, textbooks, critiques, analyses and an in-depth study of Philip K. Dick, who became a close friend, along with earning multiple awards and honors throughout her career.

Pat’s career began as the Director of Technicians in the medical laboratory at St. Elizabeth Hospital in Indianapolis, IN.  Pat’s teaching career began at Lawrence University in Appleton, then she transferred to the University of Wisconsin Fox Valley Extension.  Her tenure there lasted 26 years.  During that time, she traveled abroad, both for enjoyment and to research for her historical novel, Charles Babbage and the Countess. She did volunteer work at the Appleton Public Library and was an active enthusiast of the arts, especially the local orchestra, and mentored many students at home.  She was an avid gardener and loved spending time with her two grandsons at her special vacation home in Pine River.  Pat also toured the United States, often back packing in the Rockies, rafting down the Colorado river, driving Route 66, biking around Wisconsin and so much more.

After a tragic fall in July 2000, Pat was left paralyzed with broken vertebrae.  Her strong spirit and determination made her able to walk and return to her home in Appleton.  She continued fighting multiple setbacks from the accident, including two broken legs in another fall at an assisted living center.  Eventually she went to Grancare Nursing home and with the assistance of their excellent staff, lived the rest of her life happy and well cared after.  Special thanks to the Unity Hospice team who assisted with Pat’s care at the end.

Survivors include her three children: Scott McArt (son) and his wife Linda Vann of Houston, Dave (son) and Rita McArt of Green Bay, their two sons; Grant (grandson) and Emily McArt of Denver, Adam (grandson) and Danielle McArt of St. Petersburg along with their two sons; Miles and Mason McArt (great grandsons) and Kristin (daughter) and Al Genske of Sobieski.  Also surviving is her brother Richard Scott of Bloomington, Indiana, niece Susan Scott and nephew Vance Scott.

Pat is preceded in death by her parents, Ross and DeEtte (Ulman) Scott of LaGrange, Indiana and her brother, Daniel Scott of South Bend, Indiana. 

Lyndahl Funeral Home took care of Pat’s last wishes.  A private ceremony was held at the Fort Howard Memorial Park in Green Bay, where she lies.  Pat established the Patricia S.
