Say hello to Guam's reefs! WS GUAM 2014
We all went to Tanguisson Beach. Last year, we witnessed massive spawning at this dive site. While some of us were admiring the beauty of a few spanish dancers and their eggs, James Guest was looking to see if the corals are ready to reproduce. He checked about 27 colonies of Acropora surculosa and fewer colonies of A. abrotanoides. Almost 2/3 of the A. surculosa colonies seem to be ready to spawn, so it looks promising!

Though we enjoyed this dive very much, there was a downside to it... Those of us who saw the reef last year, were a little saddened. The damage the bleaching event has caused is clearly visible. Some corals have survived and are recovering, others haven't. For instance, the big colony of Acropora Abrotanoides that spawned pretty furiously last year, is now dead and covered with algae. And the top of a large Platygyra sp. coral that was perfectly in shape last year, now looks like it has melted. Thanks to Jamie Craggs we have some distinct 'before and after' shots of specific corals.
