A woman is in critical condition in hospital after being hit by car in downtown Vancouver early Monday morning.

The driver reportedly left scene and now police are on the hunt for a newer black Honda Civic with significant damage to its front end.

Twenty-six-year-old Ovey Yeung was hit by an eastbound vehicle on Pacific Boulevard near Abbott Street around 4 a.m.

"At this stage the vehicle is described as a newer black Honda Civic," said Sgt. Jack Sullivan. "It is believed to have extensive front-end damage as a result of this collision."

Traffic on Pacific rerouted onto Abbott Street for most of the morning as investigators collected evidence from the scene.

Security video obtained from cameras nearby shows several witnesses to the incident may be able to provide further information including two people on the corner of Abbott and Pacific and someone on rolerblades across the street. Police are appealing to those witnesses to come forward.

It’s not clear whether speed or alcohol were factors in the crash at this time but people walking in the area say drivers often speed down Pacific near the crash especially at night.

"Just because it's a big straight piece of road, and there's not a lot of foot traffic usually, I always try to be careful around here because some people just like to go fast.”

Police are asking anyone with information to call the VPD Collision Investigation Unit at 604-717-3012 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
