Volvo FL-Electric 3

Volvo Trucks has put the first two of its all-electric FLs into service with Swedish recycling firm Renova and general haulage company TGM.

The 16-tonne FL Electric is a fully electrically-powered truck for distribution, refuse collection and other haulage work in built-up areas.

It features a range of up to 300km (185 miles) on a full charge and can be completely fast-charged in 1-2 hours, or plugged into the mains grid overnight taking up to 10 hours.

Claes Nilsson, president, Volvo Trucks, said: "We are immensely proud to present the first in a range of fully electrically-powered Volvo trucks ready for regular traffic.

“With this model we are making it possible for cities that aim for sustainable urban development to benefit from the advantages of electrified truck transport."

The manufacturer said there had been “considerable market interest” in electric trucks, with many of its customers keen to explore how new technology could fit their operations.

Volvo Group experience in electrification, for example in the bus sector, has helped the manufacturer with the development of its electric truck range, he added.

Jonas Odermalm, head of product strategy Volvo FL and Volvo FE at Volvo Trucks, said: “From experience we know how important it is that cities, energy suppliers and vehicle manufacturers co-operate in order for large-scale electrification to become a reality.

"With attractive incentives, agreed standards and a long-term strategy for urban planning and expansion of the charging infrastructure, the process can go much faster.”
