Jared Yates Sexton texted the following from within the crowd at Donald Trump’s rally in Charlotte, North Carolina on August 18th. This was Trump’s first rally since his staff shakeup which put Stephen Bannon of Breitbart in charge. Sexton’s powerful reporting should give pause to anyone who thinks Trump’s campaign is simply another excercise in conservative Republican politics.
For those who dismiss Sexton, we have included New York Times video from within earlier Trump rallies that verifies the level of angry rhetoric Sexton is reporting. Its posted right below his tweets.
If we have learned anything from history, it is this. Movements like Trump’s can sweep nations as divided as ours into the darkness of violent authoritarian dictatorship. Think it can’t happen here? Think again. And equally challenging? Sexton’s chillingly simple observations reveals Trump’s long list of scapegoats. These are the people he will blame should he fail to win the White House. Its a list which includes millions of us.
Which raises two questions: 1) What happens if he wins? And equally concerning: 2) What happens if he loses?
There is a reason why Trump’s message of anger and division is resonating. Trump’s supporters are part of a huge population that has been “left behind” in the current economic recovery. If we don’t address their very real underemployment issues, Trump’s angry supporters will continue to divide us long after he is gone.

NotOt that I’d ever doubt his supporter’s act like this, but may we have footage of what he was saying instead of his most extreme followers? Sorry, I learned in high school to pick out bias…
What Trump says is a matter of public record. Easy to look up and find.

I don’t know why I continue to be surprised by the lack of basic rules of conduct I grew up with in the republican camp I fear what our country will experience not if but when if trump loses the masses will probably take arms against anyone they perceive to be responsible trump is calling for voting monitors they will probably present armed only allowing trump supporters to vote if trump wins say goodbye to equal rights as a minority including women a government owned press and world chaos this is what I fear andchristians will blindly follow just like… Read more »
No they won’t Lorraine. Not to worry. Proof of the pudding is they haven’t attacked the left yet, though the left has literally attacked them. We’ll all go down this cesspool equally. And relatively peacefully. Where it will come out is when the folks get the cutbacks that the liberals will eventually have to give into and will do, those very recipients will go nuts. Riots will start and then those on the other side will fight back. That’s how it’s gonna happen. But until then it’s all good.
Spot on! With some of the provocation in crowds that size, based on what happened back in the 1960’s I would have expected to see fights break out at the very least. Didn’t happen. The picture that does come into my had is the young woman being pelted by anti-Trump protestors as she desperately tried to get the security guys to open the hotel door and let her in. The left always talks the talk but never walks the walk.
Exactly. I saw it too during the 60s. There are way more sufficient numbers of folks on the left who will be sufficiently morally outraged, after all they know their cause is just, and will act out much more frequently than the right. Except of course by far right groups that nobody likes. There’s really not many of them. And we don’t condone them. But the left does close ranks with the violent ones because to do otherwise hurts the overall cause. So they put up with them. The left today reminds me of the crusades and this morally superior… Read more »
Video or it never happened. I could go to a clinton rally and tweet stereotypical bullshit from there too. And with only 10 to 15 attendees, who would know the truth?
Scroll up. There’s a video. You’re welcome.
um, you saw the video above?
This is not “journalism”. This is an editorial. It would be journalism if he presented all the facts. Positive and negative comments overheard. Left out his personal point of view and interjection of his own negative bias toward the subject. And if he threw in a compare/contrast component this could have been really informative. Attend a Hillary rally open to the public and do the same thing. This would give the reader something to chew on rather than the same old liberal bias the rest of the media represents. I’m so tired of only being able to read/hear one point… Read more »
Fact: violent rhetoric is videotaped more commonly at Trump rallies than Hillary rallies. Proof: look up videos of rallies.
Fact: violent rhetoric is espoused more commonly by those identifying themselves as Trump supporters on social media than Hillary supporters. Proof: get on social media.
Fact: Trump uses violent rhetoric/swear words/insults more often than Hillary, who can only be accused of “insulting” Trump by saying he’s not qualified for the presidency. Proof: use your ears.
@ Educate yourself
And that is the biggest issue. Clinton supporters are concerned about violent rhetoric. Trump supporters are concerned with actual violence. BLM will support Clinton. What happened in Milwaukee, Baltimore, and yeah even Dallas? You want to worry about how rhetoric spawns actual violence, look there.
Have you noticed that the broadcasts are completely centered on Trump. No crowd mics and only very carefully scripted crowd views. True reporting would show us the entire event. Then we could all judge for ourselves what is going on – I want to see clean un-edited footage.
You people are all idiots. Who’s disrupting commerce? Who’s attacking police? Who’s going to conventions and acting a fool and assaulting people? Not Trump supporters!
You’re right, Trump supporters only assault people who they outnumber.
@ Jamie
Ummm, you tend to be out numbered when you try and intimidate a major party at one of their rallies. That’s what’s going unsaid. Clinton supporters start the violence and when Trump supporters respond they plead the victim just like little bullies.
Pulitzer prize for a liberals negative tweets against North Carolina voters, garbage
How is reporting what is happening a negative tweet against someone? Reporting what is actually happening isn’t positive or negative, it’s just the facts. And if you doubt it, you have never been to a Trump rally or seen video from one.
Because it’s not journalism that can be verified. It’s a personal tweet. I can make personal tweets all day long and it’s horseshit to be taken as true because I’m a journalist who tweeted. It’s my lens I’m tweeting, not reality. Remember the scientific method.
bottom of the bottom feeders. LOL. wonder how he’s gonna handle his big giant massive loss in november?
He may. Be careful for what you want and get.
“Powerful and chilling”??? Hogwash. Sounds like a Hillary sympathizer to me
Hey Linn, you think? The rallies are no “Hogwash”. They are powerful, chilling and scary as all hell. Trump’s supporters are no Hillary sympathizers.as a matter of fact they’re more like members of “Hitler’s Third Reich”. Try watching them, the NY Times has them online. They are brutal and unbelievable, and while you’re at it fix yourself a stiff one…you’re going to need it!!!
It’s very upsetting, but I am trying to convince myself to be thankful that Trump has run this campaign – now we know exactly who among us would help usher in an American autocrat. Their racism is no longer hidden, their intolerance exposed, and their willingness to release all of their rights and autonomy to one ruler is front and center. I have faith in the power of the rest of us to prevent Trump from winning, but after he loses, what do we do then? The only thing I can think of is to invest heavily in education, because… Read more »

I will not sit idly by and not do everything in my power to keep a known criminal who obviously doesn’t care about our country, to lead my country. I would think that a person who cared about making our country a better place to live would have a lot of specific policy ideas, and a person who only cares about winning would have little more than a slogan on a hat.
And Hillary doesn’t even have that. Hers is I’m with her. She has not stated one policy yet. At all. Better this. Better that. But no thought through policy. Maybe she’s saving that for the debates.
Lisa, were you the woman sitting next to him at the rally? He was reporting about the people there, he didn’t mention you by name. I have noticed from reading pro Trump posts on facebook that alot are written by people who can’t construct a sentence. So I agree with him that KingCheeto tends to attract the uneducated and bigoted. Of course, other than this whine post of your, I have little with which to judge your level of your abilities.
What’s your level of education?
Perhaps you should be reminded of the fraud Trump committed time and time again building and developing then refusing to pay the American workers that built his projects! Or the first wife that left him because he raped and abused her. Or his embezzlement of campaign funds during the spring. Or perhaps his lack of understanding that America is a great nation because of our diversity. You say you’re educated then pick someone who actual would be good for the country and divide us.
That’s the problem concerned vet- that person doesn’t exist. Or if they do, they’re not running.
Ok. Rebuttal time. Time and again refusing to pay workers. So how did he get more workers on the next project. Trust me. Word gets out fast. May have been disputes. I wasn’t there. Nor were you. Rape of first wife. We’re there charges that he weasel ed out of. We’re you there? And embezzlement. Where in the world did you get that. And don’t use the word if not charged. It’s libel because you wrote it. Trump certainly isn’t st. Donald. Neither am I. Nor you. Does his policies make sense for all of us is the question.
A highly educated person would not write “it is people such as yourself” (it’s “people such as you”), nor would a highly educated person glibly ignore the horrid economic, social, and international consequences of a presidency by a person like Donald Chump who is utterly unqualified to do the job.
The press should just dump raw footage and the trump supporters show themselves for what they are.
These are tweets ….. They are of the moment observations … They don’t fall into “false journalism” or “left media bias” category.
If you think this man is lying of his experience at the Trump rally , prove him wrong. The more you protest with angry quips or Hillary misogyny , the more likely he is believable . So rant away ……
We don’t have to prove him wrong. He is the one making wild accusations. He has to prove he is telling the truth. There should be a pretty easy way to get evidence. You know, a camera, on the phone he’s tweeting with.
Simply look at the New York Times video above. Same angry ranting there. It verifies Sexton’s reporting.
@ El G
How do you prove a negative? Prove God doesn’t exist or we should all adopt the ultra right wing version of law.
That’s my point.
The New York Times video above verifies what Sexton is reporting.
I would like to know from the Trump supporters, is there anything he can say that would make you not vote for him? Because if there is not, your head is lodged firmly up your own assholes.
of course there is something that he could say to dissaude voters, and that is anything with a msg of love or acceptance. he is running of the racist ignorance card and only by turing off that could he alienate his largest slice of voters.
He seems to think Hillary supporters aren’t just as hateful.
I don’t see Hillary’s supporters and advisors calling for people to be murdered en masse.
i also don’t recall Hillary or her supporters defecating in the mouth of a gold star mother. or threatening to kill infants in the middle east. or saying we should kneel before putin. or praising saddam.
Whaaaat?? OK. Now you’re just being senseless.
@ Geary
Just Hillary herself or did you forget that she voted to authorize the use of force in Iraq?
Um, so did Pence. Are you not going to vote for him because of that?
@ Ralph
Well, according to the comments and this article, would that make a Trump supporter a hypocrite? Now ask yourself if that makes a Clinton supporter one.
Go read what she said at the time about her vote. It’s part of the congressional record since she was speaking the Senate floor.

I guess Will Smith saying kill all Trump supporters is ok?
You have proof of that?
He may have been being facetious. You know to make a point to the haters.

Democrats collectively don’t have enough hatred in them to even charge Bush & Cheney with their war crimes and torture or to take Republicans to court for treason, as they rightfully can. Overall, Democrats are a lot more intelligent and civilized. One only has to look at all the accomplishments and public services provided to you and the rich Republicans, courtesy of unions, Democrats and decent people who believe in science. Capitalism certainly has pushed the pursuit of money making drugs. That’s bipartisan, lol…. As far as Europe’s amount of research , that isn’t really an indication of effectiveness of the drugs used in their societies. Plus many pharmaceutical companies are multinational .

Because if you are, you’re an even bigger idiot than Trump.

Lol.. That’s funny.
This is the biggest bunch of BS to date! This is what the left calls top notch journalism? What a bunch of crap!
Why don’t you explain why?
Who on the left is calling this top notch journalism? Just curious, since now your boy seems to be controlled by the media that he’s making you so desperately loathe.

I made it in to one of Trump’s rally’s. I was a protester. It is a show. He loves to work up the crowd. As we were being escorted out, the guy behind me, a fellow protester, was attacked by some guy. . Hit in the ribs, tripped and punched. Of course, the attacker did not get in trouble. Those Trump supporters are rabid and full of hate.
@ Julie
You protest a rally. Trying to do what? Stop people from getting their say. Censor what can be said. Wow, in other contexts liberals might call that bullying.
Protesters at Clinton and Bernie rallies aren’t beaten and then thrown out–there’s the difference. Seems to the censoring part is what’s going on at Trump rallies.
Protesters at Clinton and sanders rallies are sanders supporters. Now they are Clinton or maybe stein supporters. Probably smart not to beat people who will support you unlike of course when these same Protesters attack TRUMP supporters at TRUMP rallies and when TRUMP’S supporters defend themselves complain about violence.
America is anger. We’re angry at our senators, Governors, and any government official that did not have our best interests at heart. We are angry at how we were taken advantage of, lied to and at how our loved one who fought and/or died for a country that would leave them behind…and try covering it up. Americans are angry. Actually when the ACA was initially considered, the democrats controlled the house and have a super majority in the senate. That means the republicans could not block legislation. It was the three blue dog democratic senators that forced this version of the ACA.

This is a good post. You need to spend time finding out WHY these things happen. Not a lecture, we all do. Look at everything that has come from the “Reagan Revolution” or the “Clinton Boom” with a little perspective, it all screwed us all. And we are the biggest problem. We must have more, more and more. But the anger should be at ourselves. I don’t vote for incumbents. But everyone else does. And in our area, in a non presidential election year the turnout is 25-33% if we are lucky. So you cannot send the same people there time after time and expect different results. You just can’t.
Funny. I don’t vote for incumbents either. Just my thing. I give them maybe two terms then off they go. To me anyway. Been doing it for years. I don’t care. I sleep better.
