IVC Computer Science department blown away by Raspberry Pi funding

Pupils in Y7-9 are getting the chance to try programming in the classroom thanks to a PFSA grant of £1250, which has enabled the purchase of 24 Raspberry Pi devices – the credit card-sized computers enabling adults and children worldwide to learn coding.

With 24 Raspberry Pi devices at their disposal, the Computer Science team is encouraging students to take part in physical computing – putting programming concepts learnt in the classroom into practice. Embedding the devices into the new KS3 curriculum, the pupils learn how to attach LEDs, buzzers and buttons to the devices and programme them. Each Raspberry Pi also comes with a version of Minecraft that enables students to programme in Python. The team also hopes to use the devices in the early stages of GCSE Computer Science, helping students learn about networking.

Joe Holmes of the Computer Science dept, said:

Thank you to the PFSA for their kind donation, which is a real game changer for the Computer Science department. Year 7-9 pupils have been enthusiastically using the new devices and we are planning to challenge older students to programme the Pi computers to talk to each other and control hardware over a network. This will make it easier for us to teach the principles of network configuration and basic concepts such as IP addresses; serves / clients; DHCP and DNS.

If anyone is interested in making a donation to the PFSA to enable the purchase of additional Raspberry PI devices, or generally support the work of the PSFA, please email: psfa@impington.cambs.sch.uk
