Galion officer, wife facing domestic violence charges

SHELBY – A Galion police lieutenant and his wife who reside in Shelby were both arrested by Shelby police on charges of domestic violence July 17.

Lt. Vincent Danyi and Regina Danyi, of 69 Louise St., were issued summonses for domestic violence, according to the Shelby police report.

Shelby police were called to the OhioHealth MedCentral Shelby Hospital at 2:54 a.m. July 17 when Regina Danyi came to the emergency room seeking medical attention and told the hospital staff she had been assaulted by her husband. She was apparently being treated for a minor cut to her toe on her left foot.

A nurse told police Regina said she had been assaulted by her husband; he had thrown a glass dish at her during an argument and the dish broke and struck her in the foot. Police also learned from the nursing staff Regina said she was pushed to the ground and dragged across the room by her hair, according to the police report.

Regina told police her husband had taken the day off of work so he could stay home to help her. She said her husband was downstairs all day on the Internet and drinking beer. When he did not come to bed she went downstairs to see what he was doing, at which time she walked in on him messaging a female on the Internet, according to the police report.

An argument ensued and she picked up a box and threw it at him. Then he picked up a glass dish and threw it at her.

Police went to the Danyis house and talked to Vincent, who said his wife was the one who assaulted him. He showed police a fresh burn mark from Regina's cigarette on the inside of his left leg near his knee. He told police she threw a box at him that struck a metal stand that was directly behind the chair he was sitting in. The metal stand hit him in the back of the head. Regina also grabbed an alarm clock and threw it at his head but missed, he told police.

Vincent was taken to the Shelby Jail, posted bond and released.

Regina was taken to the Huron County Jail when she could not post the required $275 bond. She refused to complete a written statement and sign the domestic violence charges. The couple was given a mandatory Shelby Municipal Court appearance and were advised they could each apply for a temporary protection order at their initial appearance, according to the police report.
