TORONTO – A 50-year-old man has been charged with two offences in the death of Georgia Walsh.
Walsh, 7, was the daughter of Conservative Party president John Walsh and was struck by a minivan in Leaside July 16 when she was crossing Millwood Road at McRae Drive.
She was taken to Sick Kids Hospital where she later died.
The man, whose name has not been released, was charged with failing to stop at a red light and careless driving in connection to the incident.
The Walsh family issued a statement soon after the police announced charges had been laid thanking them for their “exhaustive investigation.”
“At this time we pray for all the families involved in this tragedy. We will have no further comment on the matter and ask for privacy as we deal with our loss,” the statement read. “We would like to thank the thousands of individuals who have sent their thoughts and prayers.”
Residents of Leaside rose up in the wake of Walsh’s death, building a memorial for her at the intersection and calling on the city to do something about what they said was an influx of traffic caused by construction on Eglinton Avenue.
The community group also launched a signage campaign urging drivers in the area to slow down by spray painting street poles with “slow down” written vertically and signs saying “Slow Down, Kids at Play.”
